I have been using TI Workstation 9.1 for some time, but mainly for ad-hoc backups (ie booting of a cd and performing a full disk image to an external USB hard-disk). I don't have any issue with this as it has always done what I needed.
But I have recently starting trying to use it on a more regular basis and also evaluating to see if it could be used to backup all computers at our office. I assumed the proper way to perform backups would be through scheduled backups to 'backup locations' etc.
So I created a backup location on my computer on Drive C and performed a full image of Drive C to this Backup Location. I wasn't quite sure whether this would work (ie effectively backing up Drive C to Drive C), but it appeared to do so.
So my first problem was when I went to verify the backup. I was assuming that I could mount the image, but this does not appear to work if you are backing up to a backup location.
I then created a few file backups to the backup location which proceeded ok.
The second problem was when I performed my second Full Backup of my Hard Disk. This was an incremental backup but it failed because it was now attempting to backup the backup location which containing my first backup. I thought that would be solved by excluding the backup folder, but it appears that you can not exclude any files. I have a few files such as a 50GB Virtual machine of my old computer which don't really need to be backed up.
The third problem was when I went in to manage by backup archives. It would appear that I can not do anything with them expect restore them. I can't delete them and I can not move them. I attempted to change the backup location to an external USB hard drive and it spent an awful long time (ie left running overnight) accessing the drive but ultimately did not work. Does not give an error message, but just appears to stop.
I looked inside the backup location folder expecting to see .tib files, but all I see is files with what looks like guids as file name with no indication of which backup they related to. So I am left with no option but to wipe this whole folder and start again. This is not a real problem in this case as none of the backups are important, but the fact that I do not seem to have control over my backups is a very large black mark against the product as regards me evaluating TI for wider use. Of course you don't have to use Backup locations and you can just backup to the network location and/or external hard drive. In fact if you do this you can
1) mount the images
2) delete images
3) copy the images (eg burn them to DVD or backup to tape)
It seems to be that backup locations are designed to be the 'proper' way of doing backups, but have these very strange limitations which IMHO make it unsuitable for its very purpose.
Or am I missing something ?
I am also aware that the version I have is not the latest version, so perhaps some of this limitations have been removed.
