OS-Selector and operating systems (WinXP, UNIX)

Hello,

I have a problem with Acronis OS-Selector (AcronisDisk Director Suite 10). My system looks like as follows:

Disk 1
Partiton C: [Reverse] WIN XP: Pri. Act. / NTFS
Partiton (C) [Face] WIN XP: Pri. Hid. / NTFS
Partiton D: Extended / NTFS
Partiton E: Extended / NTFS
Partiton G: Extended / FAT32
Partiton F: Extended / NTFS

Disk 2
Ext2: Linux Ubuntu 8.0
None: Linux Swap
Ext3: Linux BackTrack 3.0 Beta

The Unix Loader (Grub) is installed on the first UNIX-Partition (Ext2) under /boot/grub/. Ubuntu is working properly but I don't find BackTrack on my system. Can you help me ?

You have two Linux entries in the BOOTWIZ.OSS file. One of them has a "(2)" after it.

Do they both boot to the same thing (both are booting from the MBR)? If so, what? If not, what?

Do you get a GRUB menu (I assume by "Grup" that you mean "GRUB")?
If so, what entries are listed in the GRUB menu?

Yes, the two entries boot to the same thing (the second one as test!).
Yon have right my UNIX loader is "GRUB"..:-[ - sorry !

My BackTrack-lines in GRUB (manuel added) likes as follows:

So you manually added the BackTrack 3 boot entries into the Ubuntu GRUB's menu.lst file or is it in a different menu.lst file?

When you boot Ubuntu and get Ubuntu's GRUB menu, are the BackTrack 3 entries listed?

Have you tried installing GRUB into the BackTrack 3 partition's Boot Sector?

In the first post you said that BackTrack 3 was on Disk 2, but all the references in post 3 point to Disk 1 -- (hd0,#). Is GRUB seeing your drives in a different order than Linux? (I have a computer like that.)

Can you provide some more detailed information on your setup and how you installed the different operating systems?

Yes I manually added the BackTrack 3 boot entries into the Ubuntu GRUB's menu.lst file.
I found yesterday the right configuration - it looks like this:

When I boot Ubuntu and get Ubuntu's GRUB menu, I find 2 entries listed and all works now properly. All is right!


Acronis OS-Selector
This doesn't show the partition with BlackTrack

- I confirm you that BackTrack is on Disk 2 !
- GRUB looks my drives in the same order than Linux !

My problem is probably on the level of bootwiz.oss from Acronis. Which information misses or has to be edited?

What interface is Disk 1 using (SATA, IDE, etc.)?
What interface is Disk 2 using?

When you installed BackTrack, did it install GRUB?
If so, did it install it to the MBR or the partition's Boot Sector? (I suspect neither.)

If you boot to BackTrack and look in your "root" folder, do you see a /boot/grub folder?
If so, what does the menu.lst file in that folder contain?

The problem is that the system is currently booting BackTrack using Ubuntu's GRUB. There is no "real" problem with that except OSS can't tell it's a different OS and so can't add an entry for it.

If you leave BackTrack booting from Ubuntu's GRUB, make sure to keep the above menu.lst entry data somewhere. If Ubuntu updates the kernel, you'll probably have to enter it back into the menu.lst file.
