Does anyone know how to disable the windows messenger?? I keep getting that .NET window by the taskbar saying someone is online saying 'HEY' ! My daughter uses messenger 6 for her friends, and I disabled that one, but I think this is a different messenger from windows. Any ideas? I run XP Pro, and IE 6. I went into the startup for msconfig and disabled there, rebooted and still the thing comes up!

Ha ha!

This is my big chance to be an expert!

1 - There is a free download, "XP-Antispy" which will do the job. Just Google search it and specify "free download" to narrow down the false candidates a bit.

2 - i am pretty sure if your XP has current upgrades you can do it by sort of using add and delete programs.
Hit the start button and if you have an icon on the right hand side labeled "set program access and defaults" click on that, and then on the left side of the "add and remove programs" you want to select the 3rd icon from the top called "add or remove windows components"

i say pretty sure, because i really hate Messenger...in fact i have killed it at least a half a dozen times after it was already dead, and that last was one of them.

Happy Hunting!

If your problem really is the Windows Messenger, I won't touch the advice you've already gotten, it's just fine.

Since you're on XP, you might also want to look at the messenger service, which is a whole different animal -- you'll start to see more and more people recommend that you scrap that, since spammers are starting to discover it as a new way to get advertising messages to you. And I'm not sure even a firewall can help.

Go into Administrative Tools/Services, stop the service and disable it. Unless you're on a LAN, you've got no use for it anyway -- it's primarily designed for messaging between workstations.

You say your daughter uses Messenger. Perhaps this free software called "Shoot the Messenger" will help wherein Messenger can be enabled only when she wants to use it and disabled the rest of the tiime to prevent spam.

g'day spins4,

I wholeheartedly agree with Peaches4u about Steve Gibson's "Shoot the Messenger". It works like a charm & comes from www.grc.com which to a novice like me is a great source of info. Cheers.
