This the first attempt I have seen since Zonealarm's "Game Mode" to actively target gamers. It can only be a good thing - I have many friends who game (like me) but refuse to believe that they need something to protect their machine, be it regular backups, images, or an AV.

Eh, loads of marketing bullcrap. I run avast! behind games allt he time and i never really think of turning it off or looking for some super special features to "enhance" gaming. It just works like it's not even there. But i guess all these "gaming" antiviruses are so much better. *sigh*

I run Kaspersky AV, alongside all of my games...HL2, TF2, CSS etc....all I needed to do was tick one box inside Kaspersky settings for it to work smooth as a babies bottom (e.g. for the steam overlay)...don't need a seperate AV just for gaming.

i belive bitdefender should fix their products that they already have, and then thinking of releasing new products.

I dont think they know what they do, i mean they have alot of bugs on their total-security and internet security to fix first.
Then they could improve detection rate and some other thing's, but "oH no" instead trying to make something stupid like releasing this unnecessary.

I agree, I have run AVG 8 and F-Secure on this PC and played all kinds of games like BioShock, Oblivion, Gothic 3 etc. and have never run into performance problems ever. :)

You might now run into problems but any software firewall will increase latency because it examines the packets sent back and forth. If you are playing competitively then it should matter to you, especially since not every server will ping well for you. A lightweight firewall like ghostwall, xp firewall, etc. is your best bet other than turning it off during gaming. It may not be a huge difference, but it is a difference. If this has a nice lightweight firewall I don't see any reason to bash it.

I agree that any AV can run in the background with little to no impact - but I know far too many gamers who believe it will knock 20fps of their frame rate... It seems to be an untapped target demographic for marketing an AV though.

What the hell? whats the point of this product? Its just commercial, a normal cheap suite would do better then that.

I personally think it's some kind of a replacement for the discontinued BitDefender Professional Plus version that had a basic firewall. Game mode is already included in all other BitDefender 2008 products so I agree that this is almost useless. Or they must improve the game mode. The only thing that I witnessed with game mode on is a reduce in cpu and memory usage of the BitDefender realtime protection but indeed except some more free memory there isn't any improvement with or without game mode enabled. For online games it can make a slight difference in performance.

One of the serious bugs is the conflict with Acronis True Image mout option in read-only mode which causes a system freeze. Other bugs only appears on some computer configurations.

In performance terms BitDefender in gaming mode compared to Avast perform similar, small impact on gaming the system runs smooth.Avast though has the bad habit to update right in the middle of an online gaming experioence.KAV 7 does some strange things while playing and using Xfire so for me its out of the question.
Its a nice feature and maybe all antivirus softwares should have such a switch.
Im sure the next BD 2008 build will solve the issues unadressed.

I have KIS at home and I have to turn it off to play LOTRO cause it put my pings at over 2000 ms when it's on. Seems Btidefender is trying to attract the crowd where ping is important, and believe me, that's a nice market to go after since those have money and they like gadgets.

This product was redesigned from the standard bitdefender 2008, but as Niels said it's more of a revival of BD Professional. The product targets all type of gamers and especially for the USA market.

This isn't necessarily a marketing "gimmick" but a product to help gamers when it comes to security. As some of you said some gamers refuse to protect their systems because they think it'll slow down their computers.

This build was designed for low CPU usage low memory consumption and high level of protection. This isn't just the same BitDefender 2008 with a new package and skin.

i have trendmicro 2008 pro,and don't a "special edition for gamers",trendmicro don't interfer with my games.

As for GameSafe, I dont think a separate product should be necessary. They should improve the "normal" BitDefender so it is light(er) and fast(er) on all systems (including gaming machines).

For the price, I think it offers some pretty good features. Worth looking at IMO, even if not entirely necessary ;)

As a "gamer" I have used various security products and all worked well. The only one that caused a problem was ~no mention of competitor product~ whenever the avnotify would pop-up it's advert and minimize my game until I X'ed out of said nag-screen. LOL

There are many annoying things when it comes to AV or FW protection, especially with pop-ups and updates. That's why this was created. No one is shoving down the throat a product that you don't need. But then again there are people that aren't so technical but want to be protected from the latest threats.

That's why a trial is available, to try and buy it or not. ::)

At the moment the download page where you find the trial version isn't updated yet so that is the only way to get the trial version. Personally I find direct download links quicker.

Doesn't bother me a bit, actually thank you for that! Sometimes direct dLo-links get the ~snip~ though. I'm a BD-fan from way back and weighing my options at the moment. Never would have discovered it on my own so this option came at a good time.
