Uninstall the program and employ one that does not do what Norton does.

sorry man.but honestly, I do not use norton so I do not really know the program. The only thing I can suggest, toggle through GUI settings and maybe somewhere In the settings there would be a option to disable the pop up notification window.

3. De-select the box that says "Show Security Status on Windows Taskbar."

I think you will get a better support at the now new Symantec Forums....
But calling a popup a huge bug is a bit too much.

I have used Norton AV for years, trust me the popups are there to stay. I don't find them to be an annoyance since it is just my security letting me know it is working. I would be more upset if it never showed it was doing something.

I can live with these alerts but not when it appears every five seconds, especially when I play games or see movie:(
Why I called it a bug?Because support guy told me the the same:
-{ Quote: "1. Open Norton AntiVirus

3. De-select the box that says "Show Security Status on Windows Taskbar."
4. Click "OK."

But it doesn't works because my lovely pop-ups are still here.

There's a Kaspersky discount going on their site. You get a discount if you give them your current AV licence. Someone here will give you the link.
Get Kaspersky instead. You'll go from having suicidal thoughts to walking around with just your socks on.

I rarely joke and I did not want to demean your question. That said, I have used Norton from the beginning, and there is no way that I know to stop the pop-ups. I use NIS 2008 from time to time, but it is not my first choice since other AVs/Suites run much lighter on my machine.
Only way to stop it is not to use it.

Too be honest I believe that Bunkhouse is correct. I had the same experience...could never find out how to turn off that sort of popup. It is nice to know when protection has worked but after the initial flush of using NIS is over it can get tiresome, especially if it is going on every 5 secodsn as stated.
Personally I think that the advice is good...if it is really that annoying and Symantec or the Symantec forum cannot help then perhaps it is time to look at other products. ::)

I think the popups are a real pain in the ass and ruins a pretty good product.... It is one of the common complaints from my new customers: "My norton keeps popping up every x seconds telling me xyz has been blocked...how can I stop it?"
IMHO no excuse for not having an option to turn it off somewhere....it might be reassuring to get feedback that the suite is working but not when you do not want it!

Those are your words- not ours. If uncontrollable pop-ups= product sucks in the mind of the original questioner, then the remedy is obvious- don't use the program. Not that complicated.

Just because I do not use norton,I Do not say norton sucks at all.but if you can not controll pop ups or disable them, Then its all or none, choices are simple.

Very interesting: only NIS has such option.

Why don't you read what I wrote and not mindlessly reply. I said if, and since I cannot know what is in your mind...you obviously have a problem with it or you would not be asking how to get rid of the pop-ups. I told you the remedy in my first reply. Either you will accept that reality or you won't.

Maybe it is connected to Windows popups? If so, turn those off. I have numerous applications (ProcessGuard is one) that never give me popups when something is blocked (even though I would like to have them) because I have Windows popups turned off. Microsoft in their great wisdom made it an all or nothing sort of thing...allow all popups or none rather than a program by program thing.
That is too bad if you really cannot turn them off. If there were just the very occasional one, I could handle that but if I saw very many like when I have Windows popups still on when I load Windows XP first time and there are a bunch of popups...it would drive me nuts. I have heard some good things about the current Norton....but I wouldn't consider it if I could not control popups if there were enough of them to be irritating.

Norton has pop-ups you cannot control. It makes a lot of decisions for you (read PC Magazine Review of NIS for specific decisions the program makes) such as it has blocked an attack, etc. I alternate NIS with others, but the program does have some pop-ups and more than most AVs. It offers good detection, excellent removal and fast on demand scanner. But, it still runs heavier on my machine than about five other AVs.

Read post #1- specifics are not important per se- the original post for this thread was about the presence of pop-ups.

NIS I would not consider. But Norton itself...well, I loved Norton 2001 and 2002 was basically the same...a few changes in 2003 but I still liked it. Beyond that it got too fat and slow. Then last year I read it was getting faster again. It never has had FP's and always good cleaning...but if it makes a lot of decisions for the user and that cannot be turned off and pops up lots of stuff that is meaningless because you haven't control...well, I wouldn't want it.
It seems very few AV these days think that the user is intelligent and wants to control the AV. But then that is the trend in computing in general...alternative being Linux which almost too much in the other direction...ugh.

I understand what you ar saying. But I only get maybe one popup every two or three days so it is not a problem here. And I do run a hardware firewall that takes a lot of load off of norton intrusion detection which is most likely the part that is giving you problems.

My idea too. The router firewall made a difference on my PC too while using NIS and 360 after that and in between ;)

You can find some option like "do not notify when network attach is blocked" in IDS, the suggestion by MichaelYork is wrong

May 6th, 2008, 11:43 AM
The only 2 options I can think of that you might look at are:
"Show messages from Windows Security Center"
"Notify me when Intrusion Prevention blocks connections"
199744
199745

It say MS ASN1 Integer Overflow TCP
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/attack_sigs/s20409.html
-{ Quote: "An intrusion attempt by 89.1.XXX.XX was blocked
Attacking computer 89.1.XXX.X ,4035
Destination address (My computer name) 10.0.0.10 ,445" }-
What is interesting is the first 2 parts of the attacking IP and the attacked IP are the same (in my case, the attack comes from 89.1.XXX.XX and my own real IP is 89.1.YYY.YY)
This is both my ISP's addresses and I have ADSL router. It seems just like my ISP pinging me.But why Norton AV detects it as "An intrusion attempt"??????
From Yahoo answers:
Q: A recent attempt to attack your computer?
A window on my computer keeps saying'A recent attempt to attack your computer was blocked'what exactly does this mean?attack?
A: Doesn't mean anything. Could be just your computer communicating with another comp on your network, or with the router, or your isp pinging you. Could by many of things I doubt it's anything to worry about.
