New user - Personal security questions

I am new to this forum and looking for anything and everything that pertains to Personal Security. Why did you choose ESET over other programs? Are you using this in addition to another program such as Norton etc...? I am looking for a program that will alllow me to shut ports down if they are under attack and I cannot figure out Norton. Does ESET allow you to do this easily?
