Laptop temperature question

A friend of mine has a Toshiba laptop- single core, XP a couple years old, which she tells me gets very hot on the bottom after she has had it running a couple hours. I don't know much about this so I asked to to see if she could find a temperature reading on it. Apparently she could not. Is there some place specific she needs to look? Or is there some free program she could download to check the temp? Also, what temperature should it be reading and how fast should the fan be spinning if she can find that info?

Any help is appreciated.

I would look for the Model on the Toshiba site. It could be a battery problem.

Laptops do run hot-find out the norm from Toshiba,and as Ronjor said.

If you can find one-there was also available a plate with fan fitted for using under laptops-dont know how effective they are

Also you may want to ask here if its sitting on her lap for long periods and she maybe blocking the fan cooling vent.In some circumstances for example some folks may prop there legs and the cooling vent is block by there leg,sweeter etc.I Have a New Hp lapy and when place on a hard level surface mine remains luke warm,but if I sit on lap it tends to get pretty warm or mild hot.Just a thought.

I will not suggest SeedFan for a newbie. She might danage the hardware.

I have Toshiba Satellite M 70. I can,t read its CPU temp- Toshiba closed it. My HD temp is always on higher side( 45C or more) but I have no problems since I bought the laptop( about 2 years).

I have a very old Toshiba Satellite Pentium II laptop and there is a power information menu with a temperature bar indicator on it. When it reaches close to 3/4 of the overall bar, the fan usually turns on. I don't know if Toshiba still uses it on later models. You could check on your CONTROL PANEL menu items.
