From the FAQ's section on the NOD32 website:
{QUOTE-> I am using trial version but keep being prompted for credentials though
It is likely that your NOD32 attempts to download a newer program component upgrade. Since trial version does not permit program component upgrades, please choose No when promted. The subsequent virus signature database update should then be performed well.
If you wish to use the most current version though, please download and install the latest trial version from our website. <-QUOTE}

From memory, just ignore the request and proceed with the installation.

It will update itself to the latest definitions as soon as it is installed.

username & password = credentials
The username & password are needed for program updates NOT the virus definition updates. Just leave the username & password section blank and press continue.
Also, if the virus definition database is 1.498, you probably have an old trial version. I would suggest you download the latest trial version per the instructions on the website.

i have tried all in the list from u1.eset.com through to u4.eset.com and also tried choose automatically, all prompted for a password.
I note in the help area-
"After initial installation of the NOD32 Antivirus System, setting up the automatic Internet update is crucial to provide the maximum level of anti-virus protection. A valid username and password, issued by your vendor or distributor is needed to complete this process."
I have not received a password.

Are you segure that you've installed the trial version and not commercial?

Provided you have more update servers available in the list, you must have the full version installed. This is one of the limitations of the trial version.
Please check out what server is set in Update setup. If it is not set to Choose automatically, please select this option from the pull-down menu to prevent problems with updating.

As Marcos mentions, this seems to be the full version, but with a limited username and password, for evaluation.
If you want the trial version, I suggest that you either uninstall that version, and download the trial version from the website, or ask the distributor in your area if you can have a temporary username and password for evaluation.
Best regards,
Anders
