When I installed the 30-day trial of ESS today, I got the warning message that ESS has not passed Windows Logo testing and could damage my PC immediately or in the future. (Obviously, I should have heeded this warning!) What does this mean and how serious is it? If true, why has this product been acclaimed by PC World magazine and others?

Hehe, you don't use Windows that much then, if you're not used to its foibles :)

Several programs these days have this warning, as Microsoft have not gotten around to varifying the security logo for the installed drivers that the program uses. Be assured though that ESET will fix this little glitch ASAP and theres nothing to worry about :)
