View Full Version : ADDS safe mode screen lists non-existent Disk 2 D: drive?

Up front I will apologize if I am asking something which is answered elsewhere in forum and/or in available documentation - I have searched at length to no avail.

I have attached a .jpg with a screen image which shows (in safe mode) the expected info for my internal C: HDD. Also shown is a (virtual?) 896 GB D: drive which consists of the partitions and sizes of my C: drive with an additional 597.9 GB unallocated partition. I don't know why the extra drive is listed and where, if anywhere, the 597.9 GB came from. An explanation would be great for my education, but my key concern is whether or not this will cause a problem if I continue.

What I want to do at this point is shrink the C: (Vista) partition on my way to creating a second partition (XP). I tried the Vista built-in shrink but was blocked by unmovable files, have scanned and have no disk errors, turned off Restore and tried again but couldn't get any more space, turned Restore back on, and then bought Acronis DDS.

I've already gained comfort from this forum, finding that I'm not the only one who first tried to run DDS from Vista; then tried boot disk Full version which couldn't find my HDD; then finally tried Safe version. (I also know I will likely have to "Repair" from Vista install disk.)

I hope someone can pat my little head and tell me it's okay to proceed. If that's not the case, please let me know what I need to do. TIA
