I'm not sure if this question falls into this catagory but - my daughter has msn messenger on my computer, and it's always popping up new 'people' that have come on line and wanting to chat with her and she's not even signed in! I close out and exit the icon from the taskbar, and go to start>run>msconfig> to my startup menu, and unclick the msn messenger, reboot and still the little man is there!! Any suggestions??

hi,spins4 :)

What OS do you use? If you use WinXP, did you try this step?

1. Click on the Start button.
2. Click on Control Panel (or highlight Settings and then click on Control Panel).
3. Double-click on the Administrative Tools link.
4. Double-click on Services.
5. Double-click on Messenger.
6. In the "Startup type:" list, click Disabled.
7. Click on Stop.
8. Click the OK button.
9. Reboot WinXP

Hi Sumire,

That is an excellent explanation on how to stop the Messenger service.
But unfortunately that has nothing to do with MSN Messenger.

spins4,

Have a look at XP-Antispy here: http://xp-antispy.org/index.php
It gives you an option to disable Messenger from starting or even uninstall it (take care you don't pick the wrong one)

Pieter

To stop MSN Messenger from booting up with Windows, go into MSN Messenger and in menu access Tools\Options… General TAB and uncheck "Automatically run Messenger when i log on to Windows".

Thankyou everyone for your help. My daughter tells me it was windows messenger that kept popping up. I use xp professional so all tips are useful. Pieter - thankyou for the XP-antispy page. It looks like a very useful program. I installed it and deactivated the messenger.

Thank you Phantom .. you came up with the solution for me which I was wanting for quite some time. To stop MSN Messenger from loading with Windows I was using the Firewall but often I could not access it later. Your hint solv es the problem. Again thanks.
