Why does my laptop monitor go black when I accidently have the charger cable slip??

I would sometimes accidentally bump it with something and it would come out a bit. Then my laptop screen would go black. I then have to do a hard shut down. How can I fix this problem and how can I stop it from going black when I accidentally knock it partly out.
