NoScript (http://noscript.net/) would top my list. I think default deny is always a good idea.
Adblock Plus (http://adblockplus.org/en/) - Not so much for security as for making browsing less annoying. I guess it could provide security for those that blithely click on ads, but a person like that will find a way to hose their system even with this sort of extension.
Netcraft Toolbar (http://toolbar.netcraft.com/help/faq/index.html) - Anti-phishing toolbar with some good info on whatever website your on.
LinkScanner Lite (http://www.explabs.com/products/lslite.asp) for Firefox. Pretty good utility for checking active threats on pages.
Grisoft acquired this late last year. They say they're going to maintain the pro version as a stand alone product, don't know about the Lite version.
Customize Google (http://www.customizegoogle.com/) - Just what the name says. Can help increase security and privacy browsing/using Google's sites/apps.
Those, and Tab Mix Plus, are the only ones I've used at one time or another.
As far as the second question. I'm not touching that. It's got flame war written all over it. I've run all three, and if one takes the time to learn how to secure them, and practice safe surfing, any one of those browsers can be run safely. Firefox is just my preference.

Not that I know of, but there is a small whitelist by default. However, Noscript allows you to either allow temporarily or permanently on a site to site basis, so building your own whitelist is fairly easy. Alternately, you can allow top-level sites by default.

There is another FF addition - DrWeb URL checker.
It's a pity there is no Norton Antivirus FF plugin...

RefControl (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/953) and Secure Login (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4429) are two extensions to improve security.
And dont forget the numerous cookie-related extensions like:
Cookie Button in the status bar (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1328)
CS Lite (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5207)
Permit Cookies (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/44)

You can use a HOSTS file such as this (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) for blocking sites.
If you only want to block sites in Firefox, you could try the BlockSite extension (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3145) but I dont know of any lists for it.

Another nice feature of NoScript is that it can block some\most ads as well. Simply right click on the offending item and there will be an option to "block images from xxxxxxx". Combined with Customize Google....:thumb:
Another :thumb: for RefControl. Just remember that until configured it can interfere with with the proper operation of some legit sites as well.

@ThunderZ - the "Block images from xxxxxxx" is not from NoScript btw; I think its a builtin feature of Firefox.

Thanks WSFuser. May very well be. I made an un-true assumption and you know what they say when you assume something. :-[
Curious though, how is it different from Adblock. Since I realized it was there I have never run or investigated Adblock. I already run 19 plug-ins.....gotta stop somewhere. ;D

The right click option to block images vs Adblock. :doubt:

Well AdBlock Plus can use regular expressions for blocking objects (not just plain urls) and theres also filters to hide the white space leftover from blocked objects.
ADB was made for blocking ads so if thats your goal, use it.
