Installing Wolvix Linux - Full tutorial

Hello,

I have written yet another full tutorial, this time - Wolvix.

Wolvix is Slackware-based. But while Slackware is kind of difficult, Wolvix is terribly simple. You won't ever need use the command line. Sounds incredible, but you won't believe until you try it. You'll be surprised.

Of all the installations of linux so far, I found Wolvix to be the most idiot-proof (pretty much a necessity in my case ;D )

Agree, it is packed with applications and very fast.

Two things, why does the load-up stall when my internet connection is down ? In fact, is this a linux thing because Dreamlinux won't seem to load at all unless I have an internet connection ?

Secondly, to have no screensaver options, not even a default screensaver, seems a bit odd.

OT but I tried the live CD of OpenGeu. Very, very slow on a laptop with 256M of memory.

Also OT, but have you tried Dreamlinux yet ? Super fast on CD and install.

Great to look at with that MAC feel like gOS. Easy-install feature for Opera and other apps.

I have not noticed the stalling when network is not present, really odd. How do you connect to the net?

I'll try Dreamlinux soon. It's on the list...

With Wolvix it stalls at this line:-

DHCPCD:MAC ADDRESS.................etc. Always loads eventually

With Dreamlinux it stalls at something like...

DHCPREQUEST.255.255.255.255 ......etc . Didn't have the patience to wait previously and just connected the cable.

Waited tonight and Dreamlinux did load after several ''time-out intervals''

Can post more specifics tomorrow with the actual load messages. These aren't a verbatim, but just to give you an overview.

I connect through hooking the machine in question to an office LAN with router if that helps.

Monk, I've had an idea:

Do you assign dynamic ips to your clients in the LAN or do you give them static ones? I suggest you assign static ips (by mac) through your router interface.

It is possible the dhcp server (your router in this case) times out or there are too many machines and it checks every address...

Nice to see Wolvix getting a run alongside some of the higher profile distros at dedoimedo.
Agree with everything you said MrK.
I really like this little distro. Hard to find a bad word about it other than some of the inherent 'difficulties' of slackware.

Wolven has done a remarkable job.

I read somewhere he has joined forces with the developer of another distro : Martin Ultima (Ultima linux)

This Martin Ultima runs a witty forum and has an interesting sense of humor.
It will be interesting how any cooperative efforts might turn out.
Must give Ultima a burn in the VM.

I do struggle a bit with some aspects of "raw" slack but am enjoying the curve.

Do you have any useful links re: installing VMWare tools in slackware and derivatives in VMWorkstation?
Do you think a similar install would work in Wolvix or Zen ?
I admit to not doing enough searching recently: but hoping for a few links before I go looking.

As to VMware Tools in Slackware - I haven't looked too deeply into it, but I remember some references about it. I'll see what I can find later.

I looked at Slackware's tutorial too, and found this:

Can't you just iptables -A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT ? Why do you add source and dest., is there a significant difference?

Now, can a non-desired process access the loopback? In which case, your rule does not cover it ...

If i understand you correctly, i'm changing it right now.
What comms is my rule allowing that are not desired? If you gots nice links to read, me goings to reads them. I'm thinking about printing some more tldp for reading, never got them networking docs :P

I don't know what comms - and I'm not sure if something like that could happen. Therefore as a rule, be as detailed as you can in your rules - you will reduce any chance vectors.
