Yes, the free Avast detects viruses, worms, backdoors, trojans, ad/spyware, etc.

I used avast for more than a year now and several times he rescued my computer. I'm very satisfied with this software, it actually does detect harmful viruses and spywares that usually other anti-virus programs can't!

So does this mean that Avast will release an anti spyware program?

I think rejzor was referring to this quote:
-{ Quote: "starting with v4.8, avast is now officially an antispyware application, too (CheckMark certified)." }-
It doesnt mean there will be a separate AS.

So they will include more spyware detection in Avast anti virus? Sorry I'm a bit confused on this.

It just means it will have passed West Coast Labs' Checkmark spyware certification test.

Cheater,
Avast is the only freeware AV which includes antispyware fingerprints (current version e.g. 4.7). From verson 4.8 it is now also officially marked as an antispyware program because it passed the test (as WSFuser explained).
