In 2003, security product improvements were mostly incremental and evolutionary. Firewalls became faster and more effective, protecting against a greater range of attacks. Virus scanners became smarter and better at finding malicious code. Some intrusion detection and prevention products are approaching maturity and together with management consoles and utilities, made it much easier to manage.

However, the bad news is that overall, things got worse in 2003 according to reports coming out of security products and services company Trusecure Corp. In its 2003/2004 Trends and Predictions for Viruses In the Wild report, the total number of viruses reported "in the wild" increased by 24 percent.
