How do I get AVI files onto my Ipod???

I downloaded the newest version of Real Player because I heard you could do that in it and found out its for the premium version. GRRR Itunes does not let you do this at all. Is there a way I can get them onto my Ipod??? I found a video on youtube called Winff.

i think the easy way would be convert the avi file to mp4
