Free online storage

Anyone here using a free online storage? I want to use such a service if it exists. Just for storage of some data( not privacy sensitive).

Also what is the reliability of such a free service? I mean suppose I upload some data today and may be after one year I want to recover it and I come to know that service no longer exists?

You can use xdrive (www.xdrive.com) which is a service from AOL, and of course you have to register an AOL account or screen name. Once you've had it, you can use an application called xdrive desktop to backup and restore your files or data directly from your desktop.

Mediamax(used to be streamload) offers 25GB and has been around for a while.

Adrive offers 50GB but is pretty new (beta).

What are you looking to do with the online space?

If you are looking for a backup service then MozyHome is great. You download a program and tell it what files, file types, folders to backup and set up a schedule. It does it all in the background with out you having to worry. its 2 GB free or $5 per month for unlimited.

Please let me know what you find out about the various services. I'm looking for something to do the same things you listed.

I've been also thinking about using Amazon S3 (I listed the pricing below) with the Jungle Disk client (heard about it on Security Now - encrypts data, works with Windows, Mac, Linux and you if you purchase it, you can install it on as many machines as you want (lifetime deal)).

Hi Infinity, my plans are not for a lot of serious online backup. I have just bookmarked the links but not sure when I will upload as I have some problems with my DSL. Also need to recollect my backups etc.

I mainly use gmail for my online storage. I use gmail drive which allows me easy access via windows explorer. I also use box.net which offers free online storage and works well for me.

I used www.fileupyours.com for almost two years. Very easy to use. They provide only 100 MB an a Bandwidth of 500 MB per month. One drawback is, that you have to login once per 25 days at least, otherwise your account will be deleted.

I tried some other services in the past, but some require a change of my firewall settings, which i didn't like to do.

I found about gmail drive yesterday and its the biggest free storage i can find which is accessible from explorer.

I only found one other service (box.net) that allows access from explorer.

You mean gmail? How you use it for backup? also max capacity is just about
6 GB.

Theres a free app called gmail drive which allows you to copy and paste files to your gmail account via windows explorer.

Yes, but be careful. I did upload a backup of Shadow Protect .iso (333MB) using gmail drive and after a while of uploading Gmail decided that something suspicious was going on and suspended my gmail account for a day.

I think I am not going to use it as it can,t be reliable. Not supported by Google!
