I am dual booting XP and Ubuntu. For some reason I want to uninstall Grub from MBR to get orginal windows MBR only. Don,t have a windows CD for fix MBR( only recovery image disk for XP).
How can I do that?
Thanks

windows, due to sucking more than a hole in a space suit, can't do that.
fixmbr, fdisk et all actually doesn't *completely* overwrite your mbr...
if you installed another os, only way to get it working with windows again is to actually install it again.
this is due to the MS tools not setting a small bit signifying that "hey, windows was installed, cool!".
i saw a "special" fdisk made by a norwegian guy, that has the added functionality of setting those bits, also there's information on the subject there. ::)

Are u sure? I think GRUB can be removed and added again to MBR!

sure you can remove grub from the mbr, and you can do a fixboot / fixmbr. won't help though
windows won't boot due to lacking those extra bits.
feel free to prove me wrong. actually, please do, because i haven't gotten it to work. i might be stupid though.
i even hex edited the mbr to match that of a bootable ms dos floppy, to no avail

Never played with MBR and don,t want ATM( no time). I will try fix MBR via BartPE and if no avail I will restore an image with MBR!

Hello,
fixmbr will work without problems.
You can try that using BartPE or Ultimate Boot CD for Windows.

you can use an ubuntu cd, i've never done it though and i'm not sure what it does, but it might completely restore the MBR.

this is what the ubuntu cd uses -

Hi aigle
I've done it before with fixmbr -no problems-
Lately i've used a software called SuperGrubDisk..allows you to do almost anything with the grub, including restore of MBR. Just google it.

Thanks for all the replies.
Infact I reloaded an Image with MBR. Not that I did not want to try these option but accidently the partition table was damaged so I went for image recovery.

Hi,
I think, you can also use the trial version of Bootit NG from terabyteunlimeted.com. It provides the possibility of writing back a standard MBR.

But it,s not the use of a trial IMO.

I see. In this case you can also try the free tools MBRWork 1.07b or MBR Utility from here http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/downloads-free-software.htm
