View Full Version : What are the AVs that is preferable as a sub?
OHM
January 24th, 2008, 11:39 PM
Hi,
I'm using NOD32 v 2.7 as my main AV in Vista Playform.
And I was just wondering if there is any AV that is preferable to choose and use it as a sub.
(Just incase NOD32 misses anything.)
Any good opinions?
Thanks!

You shouldn't run two anti-viruses.

Hi,
Oh, I didn't meant to use two anti-viruses in real-time.
I meant to use one as a on-demand scanner.

what about Dr. Web Cureit http://www.freedrweb.com/
you can use that as a back up to your AV you just have to download the program manually to get the latest malware definitions :thumb:
or there's Prevx CSI http://www.prevx.com/ you have to buy the full version to remove any malware it detects.

Hi Gizzy,
Thanks for your reply.
Is Dr. Web Cureit worth giving a shot?
Heard that its detection rate is not that good.

It's definitely better than what you're using now.

You could try Avira Classic. When installing you easily deselect the guard and only install the ondemand scanner.

:thumb: I second this idea.
Just as a personal experience from the last day or two cleaning my sis's computer, if you use Dr. Web cure it, make sure the detected files are not false positives before you remove them. 4 out of the 5 files it detected to the best of my knowledge were FP's and the other was in AVG's AV vault. I submitted the other 4 to Virus Total and they looked pretty good. I'm not bashing, just giving some advice. I've become accustomed to double-checking a file before assuming it's bad. All my other software occasionally gives FP's.
Also, Prevx CSI is very fast, but probably not as thorough as others. From what I gathered, it was meant to target common infections. It's still very useful as an occasional check.

Agreed. It's not likely - it's a fact.
Barring possibly McAfee, Eset is perhaps the worst of the mainstream antivirus programs out there now. Their only claim to fame is their streak of passing a famous but horribly outdated and completely irrelevant antivirus test, and their emptily-overhyped heuristics.
It's sitting in my system tray now, looking pretty and doing very little else besides. But I'll leave it to you to discover that for yourself in due course.

You could try online scanners.

What AV do you use then?

NOD32 for the moment. I usually don't use any.

That's interesting and surprising since you don't seem to be 'positive' about NOD32. Or did I misinterpret your remarks above?
If so, I apologize.

No, I'm not, but I never said I was using NOD32 because it has great detection (it doesn't).

Point taken :)
It guess it also comes down to (or starts with) personal surfing/downloading habits. If you go looking for trouble you're bound the find it...

I've used online scans to check on how Eset's doing from time to time and they have always backed up Esets results. Hey but stick to what suits you.

What is with this thread???Secondary av!!!!You don't need one.Who ever advise you doesn't know what is talking about not even for on demand. Why to put unnecesary heavy on your system?Who advise you to switch nod32 to another av without at least giving you a "documented why"and only based on his personal preference is talking nonsense, and shouldn't have bottered posting.
If for some reasond you don't trust nod32 change it,or as Xenephobe suggested use once or twice a month an online scanner.Get yourself a firewall if u don't already have one and you want to be more protected.By the way I'm not defending nod 32 here i use another av.
