Can anyone tell me exactly what the AVG Resident Shield is and what it does? Thank you very much. user427

From the AVG AS Help File:

"AVG Anti-Spyware resident shield protects your computer against malicious software (malware) that tries to run on your computer. It checks files as they are opened, scans memory of all starting applications, and allows you to remove tracking cookies automatically. "

I recommend reading the Help File. Many questions will be answered.

I thought in previous versions you could stop it from running in the background, but as the versions updated I didn't notice the ability to turn of the real time protection.

Can you turn off real time protection?

You can turn off the resident shield by unticking that option on the GUI or on the system tray icon; however, you cannot turn off the service (guard.exe) unless you disable it in system services. If the service is disabled, AVG AS will not function. Guard.exe even runs in safe mode and is required for doing a demand scan. Is that what you mean?

Open AVG Antispyware to the Status screen of the GUI. Look in the upper right hand corner where is says "Help" and has a ? beneath it. Click on the ? and the help file will open.

I can't tell you anything about the Grisoft antivirus program, because I don't use it.
