Hello lodore,
I have been a satisfied user of Logitech's Trackman Wheel(wired) for approximately two years and it is compatible with Vista. A Cordless Trackman Wheel is also available. Please see the links below for more information.

Hope this helps.

The wired version is the one I'd also recommend. Excellent trackball that's easy to use with a perfect shape. Couldn't recommend it more.
For ergonomic keyboards, the Microsoft NEK 4000 is my recommendation. I've always been partial to MS keyboards and this one has been perfect.

Ha! Admittedly I'm not up to snuff on parent-tricking anymore, but try the whole "health issue" and "wrist stress" angle! Worth a shot! :P
