View Full Version : KAV's new free product

Has anyone tried the new KAV free scanner? I tried doing an online scan and now it has this:
http://usa.kaspersky.com/products_services/free-virus-scanner.php
Looks like a sweet deal; free on demand only with cleaning and scheduled scanning.
My question is, will this product give me the infamous CHDSK errors, and does it scan for everything including spyware/keyloggers?
Thanks

Aha, I see this is based on the old KAV 6 engine.
Aren't they currently alpha/beta testing KAV8?

yes they are.
This tool is something like drWeb Cureit

So does this one have the CHDSK issues and will it detect everything that the paid for product will? And does it have a quarantine?

yep, chkdsk should still be an issue, i dont think kaspersky are working on that till version 8.
although, i cant be too sure.

Your question is a bit inaccurate, as chkdsk 'errors' are not the issue. The primary concern with KAV 6 and 7 has been iSwift's addition of numerous ObjectIDs to the NTFS indexes. Among other things these are known to cause chkdsk to take longer to run and, in some cases, be unable to complete.
I haven't specifically tested KAV 6 SOS, so I can't say for sure whether or not this version would cause any of those issues. However, the documentation for this product indicates that iSwift is used, so the answer to the question that you appear to be asking is "probably yes".

I'm currently looking to ditch the realtime protection (NOD2) and replace it with a decent ondemand only. A context-menu scan is a must with this approach, and this thing needs to be running all the time for it's context to work :P
A no go for me...

if chkdsk should still be an issue, i'd rather use Cureit, as it's just a complement to primary av.

I never had the chkdsk issue and I can't imagine this is the case with this tool. Because this is an on demand tool just as CureIt

Theres always some reason a commercial AV enterprise like Kaspersky gives something like this away for free. It's reminds me of something along the lines that if it works on your machine good for you, if not, well thats the chances you take.
So what exactly is the general concensus on this freebie scanner, is it safe enough and worth using as On-Demand or not?
Thanks

It's safe don't worry
It's an on demand tool with the detection strenght of Kasperky. As said earlier same idea as drWeb. No catch at all.
Offcourse Kaspersky want to use the tool as a trigger for people who haven't used Kaspersky earlier ;)

There are two versions Kaspersky SOS & Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool.
Last one is free. First one is a business tool

As this is based on the KAV 6 engine, are you saying that there is no difference in strength between the KAV 6, 7 and 8 engines?

If I recall correctly Kaspersky did a major rewrite a while back. I THINK it is the same engine but they have added other stuff like PDM. Vendors don't change their engines much even with new versions. New versions every year seems like marketing to get people to 'upgrade'.

Hello,
{QUOTE-> As this is based on the KAV 6 engine, are you saying that there is no difference in strength between the KAV 6, 7 and 8 engines? <-QUOTE}
No. Basically v7.0 use a new heuristic engine so it has better detection than v6.0. v8.0 use a new av core engine with part of the avz product microcode from what I understand, new format of signature database and many others things. Btw, you have to take in consideration that you are comparing a v6.0 & v7.0 release with a v8.0 alpha here.

Their webpage is retarded. They advertise it as free solution (which in fact actually expires after ~30 days).::)

Regarding the link in the previous post- any idea how to uninstall it?
Never mind- it has to be taken out in Safe Mode; and there's NO reason to leave it on.

Hello,
for uninstalling, go to the folder the program is installed in and run the file "unins000.exe".
Kind regards,

Thank you Peter for your response. I initially tried to remove the program via unins000.exe, but got an "access denied" dialog box; in order for me to remove the program I had to boot in Safe Mode and then run the uninstaller. I was kind of surprised that this would be the case.
I also assumed that a program that purports to be on demand would load itself by default at computer startup.
Thanks again,
Megan

The self=protection mode is the culprit. you need to turn that off, before the uninstaller works.
Threw me off for a while at first too.

Thanks guys for the steps needed to uninstall smoothly (i hope)
I take great suspicions on releases like these and generally avoid them altogether.
If it's assured safe then thats all well and fine, but if it's going to cause a user to lose time just to uninstall it, then it's not of so much use.
GOOD GRIEF! Is this a gamble list or what? Which one do you take your chances on? :o

So are there any issues with AVPTool over chkdsk and iSwift, or any other quirks it might present also?
