View Full Version : OSS defines OS itself

Hi all,

I use OSS for a while now (thanks to MudCrab) to be able to select XP or Linux. However, sometimes I experience a strange behavior of OSS (I could not find a thread about it in the forum).

I have an eSATA drive which contains one NTFS partition and one FAT32 partition. When the drive was turned off the last time OSS ran, OSS searches for an OS on the eSATA drive next time when it is turned on. Besides the fact that this takes some time, it defines an unknown OS pointing to the NTFS drive which does not contain an OS. I can't find an option to turn this off.
Is there another way to stop OSS searching for an OS not defined by the user?

Thanks,
Rene

Was on OS ever installed on the eSATA hard drive?
If one was, there may be enough information in the MBR or boot sector to make OSS think it contains an OS and sends it searching for the files.

Do you delete the "Unknown OS" entry that OSS finds?
If you do, it may be better to leave the entry and just hide it. that way OSS will know it's still there and hopefully not search again. (To hide an entry, right-click on it and select Hide. To view again, select the View menu and select Show Hidden.)

Hi MudCrab,

Thanks for your reply.

No, there has never been an OS on the eSATA drive, it was new out of the box.
It´s a good idea to hide it instead off deleting it. I will do this next time and post the result here.

Rene
