Does windows XP phone home and what information do they send?

Yes it does!

For instance:


· The timeserver default is to a MS site.

· Every time you click Windows Help, on the lower right of the window, “Did You Know?” updates subjects of interest from MS.

· Automatic Update is on by default.

· Windows Messenger (MSN) starts automatically by default. Here’s another one for you. If you choose to not start with Windows, it magically starts whenever you browse to your Hotmail account.

· Media Player contacts to update its Media Guide. "

There are some features you can disable through your firewall.
For my part I found that Windows Media Player was a little too talkative...
So I disable it everytime I don't need it! Some people prefer to disable the updates and would download them manually rather than automatically.

I was aware of Automatic update, Search companion, Media player and Messenger.

But apart from m$ trying to update the files on your pc, there isn't anything that i should be concerned about?

There have been all sorts of rumors of phone-homes to verify, for instance, legitimacy of licensing, or to track other illegitimate software, etc. I don't know of the truth of these and would be interested myself if anyone had any verifiable findings.

Apparently windows XP will send a PID, which is cross referenced with M$

M$ will know that the computer at a certain IP address is using a blacklisted/unlicenced key.

However they can't do anything as the evidence is obtained illegally.They just make it difficult for you, such as when you install sp1 and your licence key contains 640 or 645, it will refuse to install. :-\

That's interesting!
