Any changlog or what's new in it?

I have always expected more features from acquisition of AntiSpyware and investment from Intel.

So may be finally version 8 is the version to show the fruit of it??

I've had a little bad luck with the firewall component . . . it would not hold my exceptions. Also, the "train spam" function was disabled on my copy. Further, it seemed to be a bit more cumbersome during "realtime" scanning (but this has been my experience with a number of other AV beta programs). On-demand scanning was quite acceptable, speedwise.

All these comments are regarding AVG Pro 8 beta using Windows Vista Ultimate w/3G RAM in a Dell XPS 410.

Regards,
Jim

the beta is only about 3 weeks old and Jim is right, there are some bugs but they are aware and seem to be very resonsive. I will post some shots later. But I am impressed with where it is heading, but beta will be awhile.

I tried it only briefly. It appears to be a very early beta. I liked the new GUI a lot. Lots of bugs at this point, and memory consumption is much higher than v7, but I am guessing that will be reduced as it gets closer to the final build. I did not install the firewall component, as the installation routine warns there is a lot of diagnostics code left in it. The firewall sounds like it is an even earlier state than the AV.

Overall I am excited AVG is getting a major overhaul, but this current beta build is too early for my use. Hopefully when it is release, they keep a free version available.

It looks nice :) I hope they revamp their other products as well.

screenshots added,

quite a few false positives for prevx 2.0

edit:

there is no option to IGNORE a threat when the virus detected popup shows.

i can restore the FP's, but immediately they pop up once again and the process starts over again.

where is the ignore option, where is the exclusion list?

Thanks for the screenshots.

Still not really much of a looker, but a massive improvement from v7 nonetheless.

Doesn't the main GUI look a little like Blink's GUI. It was a while ago when I gave Blink a try so I could be wrong, but this new AVG GUI sure looks familiar.

Finally a proper a modern GUI.

I just checked on Av-comparatives. Seems the detection rate has really been improved and now on par with others.
So any engine improvement would be great for the free antivirus.

And without the slow update issues with AntiVir, AVG may prove to be a very good free AV :)

The version that was tested on AV-Comparatives was AVG Anti-Malware. Not AVG Pro. AVG Anti-Malware has the Ewido anti-malware engine incorporated into AVG Pro software. So, it's detection rate is higher then AVG Pro.

That "AVG Pro" beta seems to have an Anti-spyware component as well if the screenshots are showing correctly. Methinks that AVG Pro and Anti-Malware will have similar detection rates with version 8.0 onwards, but dunno.

yeah, i wonder how it will work with the different licences they have.

obviously the suite licence will be the top-dog, but what will happen to AM and PRO licences?

regarding the GUI, the settings pages reminds me very much of bitdefender.

I gave the beta try today. I couldn't get the firewall to pass the ShieldsUp test at GRC. All ports were stealth except one. It was closed. Sorry, can't remember which port. Other than that, I like the looks of it much better, and configuring it is an easier process.

i do like the addition of the automatic link scanner, although it isnt as fast as id like.

still quite a few bugs, but im pretty sure AVG will iron them out before it hits release.

note: its also a nice touch to see the avg icon on the linkscanner being animated with a twirl :D

To any tester: can you turn off the search result icons but still have the LinkScanner component protect you?

I installed v8 and my system blocked, no internet.....nothing! Quickly removed it and guess it's not quite ready to even try it a little.
