mouse pointer goes weird

Hi
very often the mouse pointer goes weird, disappear, goes up and down, jumps from corner to corner, or just disappear, I have to lift the mouse and move it on its pad to get it back. any one knows what is wrong. Thanks
system: p4, 2.53MHz, 768Mb RAM, XP sp1, IE6 sp1
Mouse: wired optical mouse(written on it Microsoft)

I don't know if this will fix your problem but when I first got my optical mouse the curser was very nervous it would bounce around a little bit every once in a while. To make a long story short it turned to be the color of my mouse pad the laser would not bounce back to the mouse pickup right. I changed pads and have not had the problem since. Pretty simple but it worked for me. ;)

I've a deep-dark-grey jelly mouse pad, almost the same colour as the mouse lower half (top half is white). I have read about laser-light and colour saturations. I think there is a point in what you have said.
to which colour you changed your mouse pad to.

The mouse pad color I have now is dark blue.
