I have been using HandBrake to rip DVD movies on my new Mac. It works really well. I transfered one of the files to my Vista machine to see how the movie would play back. But Windows Media Player does not support MP4. I found lot of players that will view MP4s, but I have no idea which to choose. If you play back MP4 on XP or Vista, what do you use?

I have not tried but Im most certain my KMPlayer will play them fine.

If you want to play them with WMP, look at this guide (http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/how_to_play_mp4_files.cfm).

MPUI, KMPlayer, or any DirectShow player with FFDShow installed (Media Player Classic).

Download the Haali media splitter if you need to use WMP:

Thanks. VLC is the one that I chose. It has a minimal install, which is one of the things I wanted. Plus it has some LAN features that I would not mind fiddling with. Maybe I can set a video server with it. We'll see...

The quality of the video playback is very good.

Still, I would not mind finding a plugin for Windows Media Player. I find it odd that Microsoft has chosen not to support it (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316992). This leaves the door open for people to switch to iTunes instead.

I don't want to use iTunes in this example, just because I want to see if I can get WMP to play MP4 and H.264.

mp4 isn't a codec. It's a container like avi or mkv that can contain numerous types of video and audio. You need a directshow splitter (Haali) and a codec. If you ripped to h.264 in Handbrake you need a h.264 codec like ffdshow or a commercial version like coreavc.
