it says something about a codec not installed. This hasn't happened before.

This FAQ from Microsoft may help you:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/faq/codec.mspx

I usually install K-Lite Full pack, which covers most formats. Some
folks have had problems with codec packs and don't like to install
them, but they have always worked fine for me. You will see
differing opinions as the whether or not to install third party codec
packs, and if so, which is the best.

You might also try an alternative media player like VLC which I believe comes
with its own set of codecs installed.

Might wanna try VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) which is free. It plays pretty much everything (including DVDs) without the need of you installing tons of codecs.

Glad you like VLC, I have it set as my default media player.
Believe it or not, once in a while WMP with all those K-Lite codecs
actually does some things better than VLC, so I keep it installed as
a back-up player. YMMV. Good luck.

Ok I'll keep it as a back up.

??? Curious as to why not. First, I do not believe you can totally uninstall WMP. Only revert back to 6.xx I think. Have done this on all 4 XP Pro PCs and use only VLC (with applicable K-lite codec pack). No known issues, yet......

Bingo! well done ThunderZ thats exactly right, uninstalling will only revert back to the original version, and in most cases will not work whan you do ;)
