It has been said that you should leave IE as the default browser so that you get your Microsoft updates. I have seen comments to the affect that you can use another browser i.e. Firefox and still get the updates. Does anyone know if the latter is true or not, and if so how? ???

AFAIK its not true.

I have had Firefox as default and IE was able to use Windows Update just fine.

What WSFuser said. I have FF set as the default browser. However when I check for updates manually IE automatically launches.

OK but what if you're set up for automatic updates?:)

Hello,

I got FF as me default browser these last 3-4 years and probs with updates.
Don't know about automatic updates - why would you want them?

In fact, no problem! Just remembered. At work, I got FF as default browser and updates are pushed automatically...

Automatic Updates has nothing to do with IE, it is a separate service, which starts automatically on boot (if you haven't messed with it). This (yellow shield in tray) will, of course, work whichever browser you use.

You need IE to access Windows Updates URL afaik. (I don't do this, so I am not absolutely sure)

Cheers,

EDIT: You really shoud not bother with automatic updates. They are now mainly Patch Tuesday, and you don't need a service running for that all the time.
