Paragon Drive BackUp 8.5 - cant selectively backup

I've just started using Drive BackUp and my system drive has used 8Gb of a 40gb drive. I want to backup just the used section of the drive. It backs up the entire drive. How do I stop it from doing that? I suppose I am doing something wrong, right/ Thx

try settings ... copy and backup options. The first option precess sectors one by one should be off. It is not a file based backup tool

Now how do I verify the authenticity of the backup? How can I be sure it lives up to its reputation as a 100% reliabel back up. Had problems with ATI 9 and 10 [probably a compatability problem] but nontheless when I needed it it wasn't there.
