Blaze, does the download start at all and then stop, or exactly where does it leave you hung?

This is a brand new update just released (yesterday, I think), so I haven't tried to apply it yet myself.

Were any other updates available and did they work? I'm wondering if this is related to that update itself and others may work, or your ability to use Windows Update is completely hosed altogether. Are there any other updates available you can try to get (alone, without this one)?

Well, I usually don't install this soon after Microsoft releases a critical update, but I wanted to see if it'd work on my XP system, or if we were seeing some new pattern or problem at Windows Update.

It worked fine for me about 20 minutes ago. There was just the one new Critical Update: MS04-003 - Buffer Overrun in MDAC Function Could Allow Code Execution (832483). I did that install. It hesitated many seconds before starting to download, but once it started it went normally. Installed and rebooted okay.

So, I can't say there is necessarily any pattern, though this other thread made me wonder...

I couldn't easily find a reference to what upgrades I've got -- back in the old days under 98SE, all your upgrades (at least the critical ones) were listed uder Help/About Windows. But I assume this is the brand new critical upgrade for XP that's only a day or so old.

No problems downloading or installing here either, or with rebooting.

:D hi mike where talking about crapy xp lol

that probably why you didnt se it lol

xp is kinda a nightmare so many critical updates it not funny

98 is one of the most stable operating systems

me is kinda static

xp faild out of kindergarden lol

xp has windows has so many flaws i can write a book on it lol

so in most cases theres difrent updates for difrent operating systems aka windows pc's

Hey Blaze!

Well, I tried that last patch update (KB832483) and it worked fine for me.
I downloaded it with Crazy Browser which works along with Internet Explorer. It took a little while to start the download (1 to 2 minutes) and it took 6 minutes in all to finish downloading with my DSL broadband connection.

see ya!

Hey Blaze,

Not so long ago, I had a 56 k modem too
With the dial-up it was about double time of my present DSL connection.

No prob, Blaze :) I've been around computers a lot of years, and miss the good old days of DOS -- but when it comes to Windows, I might as well be just one more newbie.

And I certainly won't argue with your opinion about XP -- for all practical purposes, it's just barely past the beta stage, and should never been sold at commercial prices.

And add me to the fans of 98SE -- for my money, that was the best Win ever, in terms of reliability and stability and ease of use.

Whoops, forgot this and added it afterwards. I'm still on a 56 dialup too. Probably switch over to DSL one of these millennia, whenever I can afford the new modem -- my excellent ISP only wants an extra $10 or $15 (Cdn) for that over what I've got, and that's a lot cheaper than the extra phone line I've got now.
