FAT32 to NTFS

Hello everybody,

I want to convert an external USB-harddrive from FAT32 to NTFS. The USB-Drive is accessible, but Acronis Disc Director Suite 10.0 does not offer me this option for the USB-Drive.

Is there any solution?

Which version and build of Disk Director are you using? The current release for Version 10 is build 2160. Earlier builds did not allow operations to be performed on removable drives, but this is fixed in the more-recent versions.

If you log into your account on the Acronis web site then you can download the latest build for your version of DD.

I think DD only offers conversion between FAT16/FAT32 (and Ext2/Ext3). I don't see NTFS as a option in the drop-down box.

If you could copy off the files, you could delete the partition and recreate it as NTFS, then copy the files back.

If you have XP or later, you could probably use Windows to do the conversion, but I think you'll end up with very small clusters.

I have tried to resize a partition on my external USB HDD and DD crashed out. I have the latest build 2160.

If you start Disk Director 10 build 2160 from within Windows, can you see your external hard drive?

If so, then you should be able to do partition operations on it. When you say "crashed out", what did the program do? Did it display any error messages, and if so, what were they?

I may be having a memory issue here [I'm so old I can remember working with a $200 hand calculator], but I seem to remember seeing something about NTFS not being supported on USB drives. Might be DD has nothing to do with this problem.

There shouldn't be any problem with NTFS partitions on a USB drive. I use mine that way all the time with no problems.

What you might be remembering is that a lot of USB drives come formatted as FAT32 so they'll work with older versions of Windows.
