Is OpenOffice a good alternative to Microsoft Office, or are there better ones.Just a basic offfice suit.

Depends what you need. If interoperability with M$ users & formats is paramount. Then OO is the best there is so far. Except it's payware sister StarOffice.

OpenOffice is very good... If they would just make a good Outlook clone, I'd never go back to MS Office again....

without outlook I'm staying with office 2003. Give me a replacement for Outlook and OO would replace Office same day.

Just my experience......app within OO takes way more time loading as opposed to MS Office.

Probably because like IE, MS Office is preloaded. I feel that typing " /Prefetch:1" (without the quotes) in the Target box of OO properties helps... (right click OO icon | Click on properties | type " /Prefetch:1" after the .exe)

My two cents' worth... between OpenOffice & OxygenOffice (FREE editions huh); OxygenOffice has far more advance integration on ALL MsOffice's apps!

When it come to high flexibility of readin/converting/integrating MsOffice's gamut of documents types.... OxygenOffice is by far the best counterpart of MsOffice!! So, no need to further extrapolate on OxyOffice's Premium Edition.

On complimenting plugins & razzmatazz, OpenOfc & OxygenOfc were far more advance than MsOfffice too. :P

For student/SoHo users of standard document processing, OpenOfc is more than adequate enough. But for professionals in Legal/Medical/Research... OpenOfc & its sibling - OxygenOffice (FREE editions) is far ahead than MsOffice!

Also, Thunderbird can be integrated with OpenOffice/OxyOffice via plugins.

As for startup process, there is no difference between MsOffice's & OpenOfc/OxygenOfc. In my experience, MsOffice is a little tad heavier than OpenOfc/OxyOfc. And I would advise that such docxApps should be prevented from being included on your OS' startup process... coz it really consume a lot of RAMs, more so if most of you here got 2 & more (not including fanatics who got half a dozens) security features loaded.

;) StarOffice if i'm not wrong, has been SET FREE. It too has good integration with Ms'Office suites of apps. But was overtaken a bit by OpenOfc.

Most of the units brought in for refurbishing/repairs to my associates are being heavily utilize by professionals... legals & engineers (aviations technicals).

When done & offered an alternative against MsOffice, majority do accept. And i can say that almost 4 out of 5 never revert back to MsOffice. The other fifth usually had MsWORD Viewer installed but use OpenOffice/OxyOfc as main progs.

The engineers... boy, how they love OpenOfc's Formula!

OO comes with Thesarus and Spell check which is as good as the one in MS, there is a free grammar check as well which is a add on in case you want one.
