I have just checked a file with 3 online antivirus programs and it is clean.
There are a few services where a file can be checked with a large number of programs but I can not find any web addresses - can anyone help ?
thanks
Thankful

Fantastic
Thanks - Antivir is the only one out of all the programs to show a problem on a file that has been on the laptop for years - so looks like a FP.
will I never find a real live virus ? :'(

In addition to the above recommended site, www.Jotti.org
(http://virusscan.jotti.org/) is another excellent source; quote below from that site:{QUOTE->
"<...If this scanner says 'OK', it does not necessarily mean the file is clean. There could be a whole new virus on the loose. NEVER EVER rely on one single product only, not even this service, ...>" <-QUOTE}
Since it was ID'd by AntiVir, you will get the best result from submitting the file or URL to the www.AVIRA Lab (http://analysis.avira.com/samples/index.php) and you will receive an Email opinion, usually within 'working' hours and if it is a False Positive, it will be fixed and save others from concern... Always possible that AntiVir could be the first to ID a brand new malware the others don't see yet..{QUOTE->
False positives:
If you think our scanner has detected a clean file by mistake please select "False positive suspicion" from the drop down menu <...> Please make sure you verified that the latest version will still detect the file and it is not a solved false alarm at this point in time. <-QUOTE}

Go here-
http://wiki.castlecops.com/Online_antivirus_scans
Scroll toward the bottom where you will see "Multiple engine scans" and you will see a few. Virscan is a pretty good one.

Send that file to Avira here: http://analysis.avira.com/samples/index.php selecting False positive suspicion. You'll get an answer in maximum 48 hours. In this way they could remove its detection if it turns to be a FP. Good luck! :thumb:
