much thanks to Ilya for putting this on GAOTD. My wife and I already own DW; but it's good that more people will be exposed to it.

Hi,
Nice to know this, thanks.
Some report that its updater is disabled.
I just wonder is this a registered version with lifetime possession and one year update, OR a 30 days full-functional trial ?

It's a registered version with lifetime possession, no version upgrades, no offical support. Still a good deal for free. ;D

Hi, thanks.
Yes, I joked to developer a long while ago, asking him to make Defense Wall a free offer for a limited time. I think somehow a good arrangement this time around ,has been made between him and GAOTD. Hoping He can repeat this periodically, say every 6 months or so. Perhaps this is the effective alternate to million dollars ad campaign. A damn good way to get it popular. I will certainly try it with DeepFreeze(especially in DF's thawed mode), thank.

What if you have to format your PC in the meantime? Can you activate it again?
I had some similar trouble with GAOTD programs before. And of course the SSM version that would bug you every 2 seconds after the expiration date...

Nice, but i got a problem, or i think i do. I get a simple GUI, not like when i trialed it, or in screenshots. I uninstalled SSM even, leaving only Antivir and CFP 2.4 . DEP?

Under normal circumstances no. Running the dw installer from giveawayoftheday requires activation which will only work for today.
I tried the free license with the installer from the official defensewall website but that didn't work.
I was able to work around the problem and figure out a simple way to be able to install it in future. However this would probably violate the giveawayoftheday condition which states it must be installed today.

DefenseWall is ideal for ISR-softwares, because it doesn't need any signature updates. I use it constantly in my frozen snapshot, which is similar to Returnil, DeepFreeze, etc. in frozen mode.
That's why I also use Anti-Executable, together with DW it stops many bad executables.
The frozen mode removes any change on reboot (= boot-to-restore) and AE+DW stops the execution immediately.
It's a pity that boot-to-restore is still too late in theory, but on demand scanners are also too late.

I see. This was what i was afraid of. I wouldn't have anything against installing it today, as long as i could also install it again in the future. In fact, i did click on the key icon and told me it was activated even if i didn't install it.
Well, the way i see it, since it is format-limited, it is not really a giveaway. It's more like a trialware with expiration date the day that you will format. And in my case, i do format once every 3 months, more or less. So, i will stick with Threatfire.
Thank you.

Because updates costs money. So, to make a free version for GAOTD for commercial software, you need do it lifetime but no updates or not a lifetime with updates. I just think that "lifetime but no updates" is more honest.

Looks like that there is some problems with ActiveSkin skin engine. Check out it is registered properly.

When i clicked on the "key" icon in the GOATD package, it loaded the GOATD page and said more or less "congratulations, activation successful". After that i aborted the installation. But i guess you mean that the .dwu file is enough for registration. Well, in that case, i am glad i didn't throw away the folder yet. :D
Thanks

Hi, Ilya:
Thanks very much for providing an excellent prog without any financial strings at this time. You have shown your good gesture at GAOTD.
I have a crazy idea for you to entertain:
When your next update(let's say version upgrade) is made available, why not offer today's clients hooked by GAOTD's offer, a deep discount, or even two years for one sort of specials. It is very important to keep the momentum generated by today's event and extend it further and farther...
With today's offer, your 30 days trial option may be deeply side swept.
Good luck.

Ilya,
Great marketing of Perman, seems to me he earned a regular lisence fee with the updates.
Take care and thanks for the good program. By the way your tone of voice in helping customers is a relief compared to A2, so that is okay also. But maybe because it took so long before the help files of DefenseWall were okay you did not answer by default with RTFM, but actually reacted (fast).
Antivir free, A2 (IDS) Malware paid, DefenseWall paid

Hi,
Massive sampling is a easiest way to gain popularity for any given merchandise. In tangible goods field, due to product's physical form, distribution cost could compound and compile higher and more.
But in intangible product sector (such as electronic /digital software transmission), cost can be kept at very minimal.
In the last very short while, we have witnessed OA free, ZAAS have just done that, and now DefenseWall have jumped onto the wagon.
In my mind, 10 copies sold plus 50 free ones is a much better picture than 10 copies paid and Nada free ones.
Take care.

No, it is a skin engine I use. Please, check out if you have actskn43.ocx file into your "%windows directory%\system32" folder. If it is here- run "regsvr32 actskn43.ocx" command with your "Start"->"Run" menu entry.

This is bugging me. I tried DW before, and had no such problems. Did something change in DW or my system?

Very grateful for your generosity. As you might already be aware i was present when you very first released it and posted discussions over at Gladiator Security Forums awhile ago back. It's was destined to be a very reliable and dependable security program and many credits to you are well deserved for all those efforts.
So again thanks, EASTER

Hi at all,
What is DW detecting? I run a Test with PC-Security Test 2007 from AvBx (in untrusted Modus), disabelt al my other Security apps, and DW fail the Test complete. Maybe DW is not the safest Place to Test Programms, or is it optimized only for Internet-Programms????

Matern,
Hope below explains
What is DefenseWall?
DefenseWall is a policy sandbox. Policy sandboxes help you to deal with the fact that most users run as admins (also a lot of security programs require you to run with admin priviledges). In Vista Microsoft introduced UAC to deal with this (for a large part), but on XP users running as admin basically allow everything on their computer to be changed, including the things you do not want to.
So how does DW deal with this?
It marks a number of programs communicating with the outside world as untrusted. This type of external access is called 'threat gates', because they are the poential source of infections (ergo untrusted). This implies that those programs have limited user rights (and can not mess with your PC). On top of that DW has taken some additional measures to deal with those limitations in daily work and has increased the security on some other parts of the Operating System and files influencing the OS (also without sacrifying daily functionality).
Another nice thing is that programs in untrusted mode which call other processes/programs inherit those security limitations, to prevent malware from breaking out of this limited rights containment box (this explains the classification of this type of programs called sandbox, you can play but not harm yourself). The same thing applies to files created by those untrused programs, they also inherit the limited rights.
Your question
DW does not look for bad guys/malware, but prevents them from changing the vulnerable admin related settings on your PC. All programs and files installed on your PC are only marked untrusted when they are in the list DW recognises as untrusted by default, all others are marked trusted. Please invest some time in reading the help files.
Regards Kees

So how do you delete the files in the sandbox? I know Sandboxie you can click one button and presto the files are gone!
So using a program like CCleaner can delete the files w/out any special instructions too?

"Sandbox" means "rights restrictions". It is impossible to delete files in the sandbox, it is possible to do this with virtualization container. As DW doesn't have it- there is a "rollback" functionality there. And this process can be done only manually.

Hi, Ilya:
Very interesting remarks.
In other words, no files can be deleted in DW's sandbox,. whereas that can be done in DeepFreeze's protected mode(frozen state). But..
I am able to delete emails(web mails) at ISP level while using IE7 in DW's untrusted box. Because of ??

Hi, Ilya:
Very smart move and a very good news for DW users from GAOTD.
I just noticed Ilya has made a generous offer for DW users who have a lifetime, but no update version. The deeply discount price is very appealing. I will jump onto it later this week. I am referring this offer to DW's forum.
BTW, does that offer have any expiry date ? (I mean when is the deadline user has to act?)/
Thanks.

Hi,
In North Americans' mind, 60 days or 90 days are so-called "mile stone" numbers. And are regarded as a very generous time frame. Just a thought.
Ilya Rabinovich

Hi,
Thanks.
For me to extend it for one year updates, I just pay CAN$ 11.00 , an equivalent to 4 Big MAC, what a steal.
For those who support DW, will likely take a wise action within the first 30 days, to enjoy updated protection. Therefore 90 days is an ample time frame to make a decision. By the same token, for those folks who rather to keep their lifetime-valid copy w/o updates, it is an OK too. Ilya, you have won both ways. Take care.
