What's the difference between leaving the box next to an application blank vs. putting an 'x' in the box?

The "X" means the program's traffic is excluded from scanning. Leaving it blank is like the compatibility mode in NOD32 v2 I think.

Hi WSFuser. So an 'x' still means the application is still scanned whereas a blank means no scanning at all? Seems a little counter-intuitive to scan something that has an 'x' in it.

You got it backwards. "X" = no scanning

The feature description says, "If an application is not marked as a browser, data transfer may not be scanned." Doesn't this imply blank means no scanning?

Blank - "data may not be scanned"? I dont know exactly.
Check - recommended for browsers to increase security.

"May not" be scanned means NOD32 will only scan traffic initiated by the program through HTTP ports. Traffic through other ports will not be scanned. If a program is marked as a browser, NOD32 scans traffic initiated by the program across ALL ports. If you put an X in the checkbox, then NO traffic is scanned at all.
