I am currently running an AMD 64 3800+ socket 939, 2gb ram, 500gb hd rig. I am debating on whether or not to upgrade the cpu to the x2 4400+ or the opteron 170. I am just not sure what/ if there will be any performance gain by doing so. I was hoping i could get some input. thanks.

OT: I just noticed the Forum title isn't correct (missing hardware)

Check out this Opteron 170 review (http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardware/Reviews/opteron170/). One of the CPUs they include in benchmarks is the 3800+.

A cheap dual-core is a nice way to get a smooth multitasking experience. Socket 939 is a dead platform, so upgrading to a dual-core will give it more life.

Hello,
What do you mean by dead, lucas?

Well its not worth using for a new computer and AMD has already "killed" it anyways (http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=2974).

yeah i know amd has discontinued socket 939 chips. however, i can get both the x2 4400+ and the opteron 170 for about 150$. I am just not sure whether or not there will be a big performance gain.

It should help with multitasking but I dont know how much...I have a single-core Socket 939 myself.

Hello,
I too have a 939 3700+ and it works extremely well and fast with all the rest of thingymaggie on it. I feel no need to upgrade, even though I'm into gaming and virtualization and whatnot.
If and when it dies - I'll just buy a new toy ...

Yeah, i think i will just forget the cpu upgrade and upgrade my entire system when needed. guess theres no need to put money into something thats no longer supported.

End-of-life (EOL) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/End-of-life_%28product%29) :)
As WSFuser said, there's no point on buying a new socket 939 (http://www.techspot.com/news/22173-amd-announces-end-of-life-for-more-socket-939-processors.html) system. But getting a cheap dual-core (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103052) makes a lot of sense, IMO.

It's no longer supported, but it isn't obsolete by any mean (specially if your motherboard supports PCI-E (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express))

Get the cheapest dual-core you can find, overclock it a little and you'll have a very nice system for few bucks.
