View Full Version : How good is DrWeb with Trojans ?

I recently decided to have DrWeb as my
antivirus program.
Is DrWeb good as an AntiTrojan also ?
I downloaded TrojanHunter and looking at
their databases I see that although names
differ somehow,DrWeb covers as many
Trojans as TH and maybe more...
I see that TrojanHunter has some more ways
dealing with trojans but do I really need
an extra AT or is it an overkill ?
What is your experience ?
Thanks in advance for any responses

Trans,
Dr.Web is above average as for trojan/backdoor detection in comparison with most other AVs.
That said: it's an antivirus first and foremost. Dedicated good antitrojan software is capable to target trojans/backdoors in a far better way as a rule (one exception to this rule: KAV).
There is another issue to take into account as well: layered defense. Relying one one app taking care off both viruses/worms and trojans/backdoors does make you vulnerable. In case this one app is succesfully targetted, your have no defense left at all. One more reason to go for separate top notch softwares, targetting their own ground.

It’s always recommended to run an AV backed with AT. DrWeb and KAV are only 2 Antivirus products that I would completely(if there is a such thing) trust in regards to Trojans detection.

my humble opinion:
dr web has something that makes it special in trojan detection: a true memory scanner.
it also has a better than average trojan database(not quite kav) and better than average unpacking abilities.. and notorious heuristic engine..( it can produce the occasional false positive, although i find this reputation is not so true anymore)
it is actually one of the hardest av's to fool with common detection evading tricks.( i wonder what Nautilus has to say about this?)
if you practise safe surfing(no questionable sites) or don't do much downloading(p2p or normal) you're fairly well protected using it as your main defense.. still, like previous posters, i go for layered defense

Thanks for your answers.
I had one false positive in 10 days that I'm using
the program .
It is also interesting that as I was trying to
scan my system at Housecall online,DrWeb reacted
with a DOS screen about the "alien" invasion and
asked me to terminate the process or shutdown
the PC.
I'm not using P2P but I download much and I understand
that a second AntiTrojan program running is better
if there are no conflicts and slowdowns...
I just don't know what will happen if a Trojan come
in my way in a real life situation. Is it possible that
DrWeb and the AT mess with each other trying to
eliminate it ?

drweb combined with a good firewall (outpost) should be sufficient imho
