I wonder if they will ever find real evidence that Life existed on Mars.

This is an interesting PDF document about the NASA's 2003 strategic plan. Nice pictures in it too! Not particularly on Mars mission only but rather a general overview of space projects.

Very good stuff Uguel :)

I've always been fascinated by space exploration! And, more and more, NASA is putting up better resources on the results of the exploration.

Here is NASA's main site on the Mars Mission and what they have found thus far

http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/home/index.html

As to alien Life on Mars, I hope we get some sort of answer soon, but we have ample proof of the existence of alien life on Earth ;)

As many million years that it has been there and being closer to the sun than most of the other planets there is a possibility.

Hey Dan,

a'hem...

Actually I made the little gif from " Step-by-Step Guide to Entry, Descent, and Landing" page from the site you posted. :)

Right. They might find evidence one day.......That's one of the most fascinating issues in Science. (Well, to me ;))

When i think about the deep-ocean hydrothermal vents that leak poisonous gas and the creatures that live around it, plus the thousands (millions?) of species that call the desert home, Mars all of a sudden seems strangely hospitable (http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/press/spirit/20040106a/PIA04995_br2.jpg) ... :)

Space exploration has always interested me, especially with the visions that television and the movies have dared to imagine. Wondering if something as grand as Startrek may come to pass in our lifetime. There is always the possibility that it could happen within the next 50-100 years. Who knows. Some incredable leap in technology may make it possible in 10 years. In fact, some of the technology isn't all that far away. I remember seeing it on the net that Dutch scientists have actually created a transporter device using the theories of quantum mechanics. It doesn't work exactly the same as in ST, but it's a start. I think the biggest hurtle is going to be breaking the speed of light barrier if it is even possible. Einsteins theory says it can't be done, and we're not even close to going at the speed of light (186,000 miles per second) and until we can acheive such speeds, all of our exploration will have to be limited to our own solar system, and the inner most planets at that. I'd like to go to the moon, Mars, and where ever else. But as for right now, I think we'll all have to wait a little longer, unless you've got $20 million to pay the Russians for a round trip ticket into orbit. A little too rich for my wallet. Too bad isn't it? To be so close and yet so far.

Just for general knowledge a tacyhon can excede the speed of light by as much as three times by passing through a controlled vacume. If a natural occuring object can excede the speed of light I am sure some scientist somewhere will do it eventually. :o

I fully agree with your post BJ, :)

"Science may once again follow the path of science fiction"

Arthur C. Clark used it in one of his early stories.... ;)

Read yesterday, from the same link above:

Why Mars ?

Outside of the Earth-Moon system, Mars is the most hospitable body in the solar system for humans and is currently the only real candidate for future human exploration and colonization. Mars offers the opportunity for in-situ (In the original position)source utilization providing air for the astronauts to breathe and fuel for their surface rovers and return vehicle (this will be discussed in further detail later). Mercury is far too close to the Sun (radiation and temperature extremes) and has almost no atmosphere, Venus is far too hot (avg. 500oC) and the surface pressures are extreme, the gas giants (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune) do not provide a surface on which to land (at least until the pressure is far too great!), and Pluto is far too cold and distant. ;) Some of the moons of Jupiter (eg. Europa) and Saturn (eg. Titan) are interesting targets in the search for life elsewhere in the solar system, but they are much farther away and far more inhospitable than Mars.

In August of 1992, a "Why Mars" workshop was held in Houston, Texas. Six major elements behind the motivation for human Mars exploration were introduced by a consultant team consisting of 16 professionals from across the country...

1) Human Evolution - Mars is the next logical step in the expansion of the human race into the stars.

2) Comparative Planetology - by understanding Mars and its evolution as a planet, a better understanding of Earth will be achieved.

3) International Cooperation - an international Mars exploration effort has the potential to bring about a sense of global unity as never seen before.

4) Technological Advancement - the development of new and improved technologies for the Mars mission will enhance the lives of those on Earth while encouraging high-tech industry.

5) Inspiration - the human Mars exploration mission will test our technological abilities to their maximum. The ingenuity of the mobilized populace will be tested and our accomplishments will serve to inspire future generations. A common focus will unite people from around the world as they expand the envelope of achievability.

6) Investment - the cost of a crewed Mars exploration mission is reasonable when compared with the costs of other current societal expenditures.

Of course, statement no: 6 is debatable ::)

The entire topic of Mars exploration is captivating though. :)

very interesting...

It's quite paradoxical that "when they lose energy they gain speed" !

Apparently though they are still hypothetical?

extract from Guru Net:

tachyon , hypothetical elementary particle that travels only at speeds exceeding that of light. According to the theory of relativity, the speed of light is the limiting velocity for all ordinary material particles. Particles having nonzero rest mass can approach, but not reach, the speed of light, since their mass would become infinite at that speed. On the other hand, particles with zero rest mass, such as the photon and the neutrino, must always travel at the speed of light; they cannot be brought to rest or even slowed down. Theorists have argued that since nothing in principle prohibits the existence of a third class of particles that travel only at speeds exceeding that of light, such particles, called tachyons [Gr. tachys,=swift] may exist although no evidence for them has been found. In the terminology of the theory, the particles that travel only at the speed of light are called luxons, and those that travel at lesser speeds are called tardyons. Like the original theory of relativity, the theory of tachyons has several aspects that appear to contradict common sense but that are fully self-consistent. For example, a tachyon must have an imaginary (in the mathematical sense) rest mass, or proper mass, and it must travel faster rather than slow down when it loses energy.

Maybe they travel too fast ! ;D

Lets say for instance we could excede the speed of light in my toyota x31 space ship and we were going to andromeda. Now if we get to far from a star or a sun to use as a light source and we are going at twice the speed of light If we turn on the headlights does any light come out of them since we are going twice as fast as the light from the head lights ??? ??? ???

Well, if normal matter (for lack of a better term)(the matter that surronds us) can only travel at speeds up to light speed, and tachyons can travel at speeds beyond light speed, (basically the complete opposite)(+ - so to speak) could we be safe in giving them the following terms---
Matter and Anti-matter.

Even if a balance could be achieved to produce such speeds (in some kind of engine)one problem would remain-Time Displacement. The closer any moving object comes to the speed of light-the more time slows down for the moving object and any passengers. Time passage for stationary objects remains the same to the stationary people. It's commonly called the Doppler Effect. That's why the sound of a horn sounds different when it passes you than it did before it passed you. It would be the sound equivalent of a red shift.
It was proven after our manned flights to the moon that the astronauts aged 300 milliseconds slower than everyone here on earth. So, if someone were to go at the speed of light, time would obviously slow down dramatically for them. Theoretically, on a 5 year trip, they might actually only age 2 years, but everyone here on earth might age for 100 years.
On the opposite end, if light speed were exceeded, would time be reversed for the traveler, where by he would be younger when he got to his destination than he was when he left? Maybe if the trip were long enough, would he just keep getting younger and younger until time reversed to before his birth?

It wouldn't be a fountain of youth but you could out live your enemies if you had any. Or your creditors. ;D As long as you didn't get to young to remember which was the return home button.

You know that Mars is just 34.65 million miles away. Even at the speed of light(186.000 miles a second) it would still take 21 minutes to get to mars if you started at the speed of light. Can you imagine the fuel bill for just that short a trip.

Hi BJ!

The idea of interstellar travel brings lots of fascinating possibilities into play. :) And theories abound. Those of you who read Science Fiction books may have heard of Bussard Ramjets which are theoretical interstellar engines that can move at significant fractions of the speed of light. If you google for it you will find many links but here is one with a decent description and diagram...

In regard to the Bussard Ramjet, Nasa played around with the idea of a bussard type engine but instead of a magnetic scoop they were thinking about a really huge sail like a reverse parachute to scoop up hydrogen. Unfortunatlly the downside to the bussard engine is that the exaust would be highly radioactive. A little detrimental to any life forms that might be found :(

Definitely! And I want to add that when something appears to be or, in fact, is beyond our current state of knowledge it doesn't necessarily follow that it doesn't exist.
Only our own limitations make the world look smaller than it really is and diminish our expectations accordingly.

Well, I could and you could, but could those scientist's at NASA who think they're smarter* than anybody else, keep their cool?

*What was that they said at first about the Columbia, they preached for months that the foam insulation absolutely, positively, could not have caused the accident! Then they tested it later (to prove that it didn't) by firing it out of a cannon at 500MPH at a shuttle wing, and to everybodies complete shock, ended up with a 1 foot diameter hole in the wing? So much for "The foam didn't damage the shuttle." I'm not putting down NASA, but they shouldn't totally discount a possibility until it's been tested and proven first.

Whether a NASA scientist or a security guard, sometimes fear makes us act without thinking sensibly.

We, too often, expect scientists to be "coolly professional" but that is a mistake, for human nature is unpredictable we all have shortcomings and show unexpected behaviour when facing the unknown. No two people would react exactly the same in a crisis.

We have advanced in Science but we aren't yet a "scientific civilisation". ;)

Also, not everything can be explained by science or reason. Not yet.

The lyrics to this poem go with the Irish Drinking song comedy skit on Who's Line is it Anyway.

Oh, idee, idee, idee, idee, idee, idee, I.
The President has said,
We're going up to Mars.
How will we get there,
It's really pretty far.
We're going to have to build a ship,
I hope it's not a dream.
The United States is broke right now,
Where do we get the green.
Oh, idee, idee, idee, idee, idee, idee, I.
We need lots of money,
Yes my friends it's true.
We could always fix the shuttle,
With lots of superglue.
But we need to build a new ship,
That is what they said.
I think Wilders could do it cheaper,
Cuz they're not in the red.
Oh, idee, idee, idee, idee, idee, idee, I.
And our Wilders astronauts,
Cochise and Uguel.
We'll suit them up and blast them off,
Yep, it will be swell.
We'll watch them rocket through the sky,
As fast as can be.
We didn't send Acadia,
Cuz it would get messy.
Oh, idee, idee, idee, idee, idee, idee, I.
The ship was only built for 2,
We couldn't go for 3.
Paul's wallet wasn't deep enough,
It wasn't meant to be.
He couldn't buy the third seat,
I hope Cochise don't mind,
He didn't have no other choice,
But leave Ol' Paint behind.
Oh, idee, idee, idee, idee, idee, idee, I.
When they land on planet Mars,
They'll go explore the land.
I'm sure Uguel will say,
"This is really grand!"
She won't need a camera,
Of that you can be sure.
With her artistic talent,
She'll just paint a nice picture.
Oh, idee, idee, idee, idee, idee, idee, I.
When they do their hiking,
On the Martian soil.
I wonder what they'll find there,
It could even be some oil.
It will be a mystery,
I wonder what they'll find.
I hope they really hurry,
Cuz I'm running out of rhyme.
Oh, idee, idee, idee, idee, idee, idee, I.
On the trip back home to Earth,
I hope they get along.
6 months of traveling,
Is really pretty long.
I hope there are no arguments,
I hope there's not a fight.
Cuz if there is Ol' Detox,
Might just give Ol' Paint a light.
Oh, idee, idee, idee, idee, idee, idee, I.
And if they find a Martian,
I hope they bring him back.
I just hope he isn't,
A friend of Mr. Gack.http://www.wilderssecurity.com/attachments/gack.gif
We don't need another one,
Like him here on Earth.
My silly poems over now,
And this is all it's worth.
Oh, idee, idee, idee, idee, idee, idee, I.
Oh, idee, idee, idee, idee, ideeeee, ideeeee, Iiiiiiiiiiiii.

I'm really sorry sub. Paul's the one that really messed it up for you. Cheaping out on the ship design and all. He said he couldn't afford that third seat and like a fool, I believed him. Come to think of it though, he's not even going to give any prizes for getting 10,000 members. I'd call that pretty cheap. It's probably because of all the wild parties he throws. :o Don't look so surprised Paul. It's common knowledge around the forum. He'd rather have his beer than let you go to Mars. As far as picking the astronauts, I had to pick Uguel because she paints really good. Paul was too cheap to buy a decent camera. ::) With Uguel's talent, I knew we'd get some really good pictures of Mars. As far as Cochise goes, I had to pick him. Hold on ! Hold on!

if Cochise and I go there, who's going to take care of Paint?
We can't leave him on the ground without any care...That's too cruel! :(
We should bring Paint with us.
So that he will have the distinction of being the first Martian horse...And we could gallop over the planet freely while Spirit is taking tourist photographs.... :)

I know "vittles". :) To save room we'll bring dehydrated ones only. Alas! the same for paint: dehydrated hay.
When is the big day? Well, let's see... bj has gotten a flying saucer already (see reply 91) so let him have the honour to decide the day we are going to take off. :)
The map? No need to have a map if we know how to use the telescope. (unless you mean the Martian ground) ??? Not bj though. His head spins too much I,m afraid he might lead us to a black hole instead. ;D

Yes Paul, we're almost ready for launch.
What?
Did I tell them about that?
Not yet. I don't think there's anything to worry about. As long as their guidence system works correctly.
What do you mean? No guidence system?
Oh no, you didn't?
Refused to pay?
But that's the most important part.
How are they going to duck the meteor storm?
You don't know.
Well maybe the robot ca--
Huh? The robot? Yes he's going.
Yeah I know. Only 2 seats.
Passenger roster? Yeah I've got it right here. Let's see?
Uguel-Captian and Pilot
Cochise-Co-Captian-Exploration specialist
Robot Model B-9-Navigation
subratam
Ol' Paint
Over weight?
Well maybe a little. I had to remove their asteroid deflector shield generator to make up for the extra weight.
Not enough?
The robot weighs what?
800 pounds?
The lasers? Well I could I guess. But what if they meet up with some hostile aliens?
They'll have to fend for themselves. Well OK.
Yeah, you're right about that. Cochise will probably have his bow and arrows.
Fit? Well, I'm not sure. 5 in a 2 person ship will be a little crowded. I'm sure they'll manage.
What? Say that again? Who's riding outside?
Well it can't be Captian Uguel, or Cochise.
The robot? NO. I'm assuming that Cochise will be able to let him ride on his lap for 6 months. If his line were to break, we'd loose our navigator.
What do you mean 12 months? Oh, I get it. You want the robot back, gotcha.
What about subratam and Paint?
Well, I guess that would be alright-if you think it's safe.
Where would you like to put it?
In back, because of what?
Methane gas? Oh from Paint! Yeah it would be better to have it at the back. Then at least the whole ship won't blow up when it ignites.
Seat belts?
Yeah, it has seatbelts. OK. I'll get it done right away.
Will sub mind? I don't know. I guess he can't mind too much. He wants too go really bad. What other choice does he have?
Ok. Let me make sure. I'll take the backseat out of my car, bolt it to the outside of the ship, and sub and Paint can ride there. Right?
OK.
Ready?
Probably in a couple of days.
OK. See you at launch.
Oh Paul? I'm really sorry I got mad at you for not picking me to go. Really with all of this uncertainty about the mission, and all the jury rigging and everything, I'm kinda glad I'm not going.
OK. Bye.

Name? Well I hadn't really thought about a name for the ship yet.
What? Name it after a well known ship? Ok.
How's Enterprise? Like on Startrek?
No.
Ok. Jupiter2 like on Lost in Space?
Not that either. Well I can't think of anymor-
What? Well, personally, I don't really think much of that name.
Are you sure? Yeah it's famous and all but--
Well OK. I guess it does kind of fit with all of the jury rigging we're having to do to make it work.
OK Paul. TITANIC it is. :o

Don't get mad Paul. Just calm down.
Well yeah, I know, but I thought it would be the best thing too do. Actually, the test flight went really well.
Problems? No. None at all. The guidance system worked perfectly.
Took it out? Well that was before. I put everything back.
How much did it cost?
Err-umm-well you don't really want to know. It's a lot safer though. You wouldn't want anything bad to happen would you?

Really, it will be Ok.
I think you'll really like the new ship a lot.
New? Well yeah, kind of.
Are 5 still going? Well not exactly.
What did I do? Well it's just a little bit bigger, that's all.
How much? Well? Now it can carry 8.
Why 8?
Well we've got Uguel, Cochise, the robot, subratam, Ol, Paint and-well me.
Well I kind of figured since I kind of rebuilt the ship and all-well I deserved to go.
Other 2 seats? What about them? Who are they for?
Well just in case we find any Martians, we can bring them back.
Would you like to see a vid of the test flight?
OK. Really, it looked good. See-http://www.gifs.net/animate/rocket1.gif
Yeah. It's pretty isn't it?

On our trip to mars as science officer I feel it is my position to keep all flight personal informed of the technical end of the flight. Since we will be traveling at warp 7.3 I have calculated the conversion to light speed so as to keep our crew informed how fast we will actually be traveling. Our actually travel time at that speed should be around nine seconds. I hope captain Ugeul has had one heck of a good set of space brakes installed.

bigc73542

Hi SUb! Hope you are doing better! :)

But they have resurrected "Spirit" and given birth to "Opportunity." ;)

Theisinger and other NASA officials expressed relief that their roller-coaster ride had taken a sharp turn for the better, with Spirit on the mend and Opportunity in the middle of what one researcher called a "scientific jackpot."

"I came here prepared for a funeral, basically," Ed Weiler, NASA's associate administrator for space science, observed during the news conference. "Instead … we resurrected one rover and saw the birth of another today."

NASA sent Spirit to Gusev Crater, a broad depression believed to once have contained a lake. Opportunity's new home, Meridiani Planum, is a flat, smooth region that abounds in a type of iron oxide mineral called gray hematite, which typically forms in marine or volcanic environments rich in water."

The trouble with humans going to mars is that you can not afford to make even one mistake. If you break a piece of equiptment you are up the creek. To get a replacement part is impossible in time to make any difference if it is a critical piece. If you happen to get injured you could really be in trouble. If your transportation back to earth won't work You better just hope that there is a relief ship really close.Anyone that would actually go to mars Is either the bravest person around or they are awfully dedicated to the space program beyond personal safety.Becuase the space program to explore mars doesn't have a very good track record. Maybe the current program will have a better outcome than in the past. ;)

Uguel707
January 28th, 2004, 09:18 PM
You're right, the biggest challenge is the irremediability of the situation. Which is one of the reasons they hope to do it by way of a permanent presence on the Moon. They need to establish a better knowledge and better technologies for dealing with these isolated environments. Either way, they still need to rely on the bravery and dedication of the crewmembers involved.

There appears to be a lot of talk and planning but no action......so when is this project going to get off the ground.

"To Mars, the first frontier, for Man (and Woman) to bravely go where no one in their right mind would want to go, to be the first human to set foot on a distant planet. OH! by the way whilst your there do you think you could pile up all the junk in one place so that things don't look too untidy.

I wonder why all these Teresstrial vehicles that have been landed on Mars haven't been located near each other?.....then the working ones could have maybe given the duff ones a swift kick in the slats and maybe brought them to life.....just a thought.

Sounds like a good plan to me Uguel, Mmmmm! April 1st? has slight overtones don't you think, not a good omen for success, I would be inclined to make it April 3rd, that's sort of a nondescript date, good omen.

Have the science Boffins for this enterprise taken into account the ageing effects of distant space travel, you don't all want to get back in a couple of months time and find you all looking about eighty, some, like me, you wouldn't notice the difference but you young lovelies...well......don't say I didn't warn you.

My God Bless All Who Volunteer........No!....No!....Paint, never volunteer.........What have I told you......

I will admit that it is nice to have more girls around. But only to keep us guys in line in the confines of space. We can only play so many games of yatze without going bonkers. And a calming voice might be just the ticket to a successful journey. and if that doesn't work the doc can give us a dose of thorzine to slow us down. ;D

Actually he would need to put on weight. 8) Let say 30 pounds ...then I will "straighten" his back, give him vitamins and proteins and will have his hair grow again accordingly....

To the crew,

About the name of our rocket....

After much deliberation, I decided to name our rocket "Infinity". :) Why Infinity? Consider, we might have chosen "Skydiver" for one mission only, but since we must keep an eye on the economic side of things I'd rather name it "Infinity" and travel into space several times with it instead of going there just once. Yes, you understood me well. ;D

Our mission to Mars will not be the only one. We will do as many space explorations as we can in order to increase our knowledge and understand the world better. Mars isn't the only planet in the universe after all. Just think of space probe Magellan that made a systematic mapping of the planet Venus. I know it doesn't matter a hoot to you just now but some day, no doubt, you'll realise how addictive it is to explore the universe and how good it feels not having to purchase a new rocket or vessel each time we want to take off. :P

Your devoted captain,
