anyone knows which antivirus software works good and also lighter in resources ? . i am fed up with norton it takes much memory and resources.i am using win98 se with 96 mb of ram

You'll get a lot of responses which are based upon different people's experiences (on their systems) and opinions. Your results may vary from theirs, so you'll probably need to try a few different ones out (using evaluation copies) to find one that works well on your system.

Here's the first one. F-Prot for Windows. It's quite capable and very light on resources. See this overview thread:

why not try nod32,it is a very good antivirussoftware,but if you
want to be really safe you need to use a good Antitrojansoftware
also,I myself use boclean and TDS as trojanscanners and F-secure
2004 as Antivirussoftware,but there is a lot of good antivirus software
out there so try them and out and make your pick!

i have been trying and trying and trying with all sorts of AVs and ATS...
to b safe in one's computer i feel thr shud b
1. one AV (with IMON)
2. one backup AV
3. one AT
4. 2 spyware remover ( 3 may b better)
regardin AV with IMON -> AVG is a good one to go forward and as backup AV FProt is by no mean less than anyother AV (ofcourse i am tellin my opinion and less resouce in mind.. thr are atleast 7-8 other AVs i LOVE)
regarding AT (BOClean, TDS, and Trojan Hunter runs ahead than other competitors..)
and spyware remover..... i saw the other day someone called them three musketeers....
Spybot S & D, Adware and SpywareBlaster

How much memory do you allow for security purposes?
At this laptop (64mb...) I'm running Avast, circa 6mb in taskman.
On another system I'm running etrust (can't see any evidence that it is using lots of resources).
Both are more than adequate for their job: catching virusses before they become a nuisance.

I agree with LWM as far as hit on resources goes--and effectiveness. F-Prot is terrific.

NOD32 is also lightweight as well, and offers a high degree of protection. It offers some configuration options that help with resource use, as well.

I'm using Avast! 4 Home Edition on my son's w98 box. He's running 128 mb of RAM, and performance hit is negligible. As free alternatives go, it's hard to beat Avast!, IMO.

I think that NOD32 use less resources than AVP 3.5, moreover NOD scan much quickly your devices than most AV including KAV 3.5
The best opinion is your own, probe some AV and decide what's right for you.
This is my personal experience/opinion:
NOD32: It have the best heuristic detection, it's very light on resources and take less than most in scan, easy of use and understand, it scan incoming mail at winsock level without configuration (in most cases).
AVP 3.5: AVP is the best detecting trojans and old viruses, and have a excellent detection of latest threats. This version and others scan very slow however scan in many types of packed files. Beware of 4.0 version, it eat ram like NAV.
Dr.Web also have a good heuristic and use less resources.
