dang, ubuntu is just bulldozing ahead at full force. i just checked the what's new and i'm impressed. the ones that caught my eye :
{QUOTE-> Fully automatic printer installation
Printers are now automatically configured by merely plugging them in and turning them on. Printer setup cannot get any easier! <-QUOTE}
{QUOTE-> NTFS writing
While previous Ubuntu releases only supported read access to Windows (NTFS) partitions, Gutsy Gibbon now fully supports reading and writing to them, by integrating the NTFS-3g project. This significantly eases file and document sharing with Windows. <-QUOTE}
{QUOTE-> AppArmor security framework
This easy-to-deploy kernel technology limits the resources an application is allowed to access and can be used to provide an added layer of protection against undiscovered security vulnerabilities in applications. <-QUOTE}
there's more of course. man if linux supported games better, it would be game over for microsoft!

Ah..well one shouldnt expect everything to work right away :dry:
After a two hour upgrade of the 7.04 to 7.10 the first thing I get is "Failed to initialize HAL" and network card got lost, sort of... No connection and complaining that it cant find a network device, but when I look at properties of the network I can seet the IP and the DNS servers. Very slow response when navigating in the interface, it locks up for 10-15 seconds on almost anything I do..
When I get the time I will try a clean install instead coz upgrading a OS is almost always just a waste of time, be it windows or Linux... same same :)

I've upgraded this morning, everything is working, i only had some trouble with the xserver, but that is something you can expect with every upgrade of Ubuntu.
I can't wait for the next version, this one is allready great but Hardy Heron [LTS] should be even better. :D

{QUOTE-> And SpamAssassin will now actually learn when you mark emails as Junk or Not Junk. <-QUOTE} This is good news, but, does it still need minutes to filter messages with SpamAssassin??
I hope Evolution is finnaly able to work with HTML messages. This bug was reported 100 of times in last year..

I agree, but as long as the application base for games is what it is, then I´ll have to stay with windows as my main desktop computer. But when it comes to which OS to choose for the servers, then there´s no competition to the solaris I´m using.

Ubuntu must be doing something right because my download speed on every mirror I tried is a slow crawl. They need some internet traffic cops. Will try again tonight.

Ok, finally got it working. Something in the new version didnt like the network card built into my mobo. So I connected a D-link card and got internet running, even though it is a red cross over the connection icon and clicking on it says "no network device have been found" but thats just a minor bug.
Managed to update nvidia drivers and got the eycandy working. I dont know how to get it to show the cube (yet) but the sliding between the desktops works nice and are fast without lagging. The window key seems to do stuff too. Kind of cool how you can have applications half in one desktop and the other half in the other.
Otherwise I find 7.10 faster than the previous version. I like it so far, makes me wanna explore ubuntu further.

Will give it a run on VB later.

Downloaded it, burned it to a CD and......nothing. I tried again with a different CD, and nothing. It runs, loads, and my monitor, an older 17" NEC Multisync A700, goes to dark screen and the little green light turns to amber.
Two different CD-RW's, different brands, same results. Guess I'll stick with 7.04 for now. No choice but to remove it.

U can try on any VM.

good idea aigle. I've got VmWare server and will give it a try before I erase the CD's.

No need for CD. I usually use ISO directly form the HD for VM.
Chuck57
October 19th, 2007, 10:44 AM
Yeah, right again. That tells you how long it's been since I've used either VM or VB. On this computer, Ubuntu doesn't work either on CD or from the hard drive ISO. It spends time loading, and it's there and I can watch it load. As soon as it loads, the screen goes blank and the monitor light goes from green to amber, just as when I turn off the computer.
It's the same whether I use live CD, virtual box or VM server.

hi chuck, do you think it could be that ubuntu doesnt reconize your graphics card properly?
have you tryed it on a different computer?

May be problem between Ubuntu and his Mobo as he said it doesn,t run even on a VM.

I've thought of graphics or video card, maybe motherboard. I haven't tried the CD on my wife's computer. She won't let me, since I can't make her understand the live cd won't hurt her computer. I've seen a couple of complaints on the Ubuntu forum that look very much like what I've experienced. I'll wait a few weeks and try another download.

Just installed ubuntu. Received some unexpected error messages regarding screen resolution (never had one with previous releases) but a few reboots and it self-corrected. I am not big on the eye candy, but it seems to be a little faster, and my comp seems to be running cooler with this one.

You guys are making me jealous. I think I'll stick one of the CD's in the drive and fool around some more, maybe reboot it a few times until it obeys and runs, or I say to H*** with it and just erase and re-use the 3 CD's.
I just ran the Ubuntu check CD thing on all THREE CD's holding 7.10 that I've now burned from 3 different mirrors. All 3 CD's, according to the Ubuntu startup test say there's one file error. Apparently whatever the error is, it's serious enough to keep me from loading. Being on 3 CD's from 3 different mirrors, it has to be a Ubuntu glitch.

Black screen that's the driver. Is it ATI or NVIDIA? Ctrl-Alt-F1, login, then "cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf" and look for the driver being used. If it's the free driver, there's probably something not configured right. You can:
-Try the vesa generic driver just to get in GNOME and go from there;
-Reconfigure the free driver (example, for ATI there's this tip i haven't tried yet in Arch wiki (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beryl#Black_screen_when_starting_X_with_radeon_open-source_drivers_on_ATI_X700))
-Select the proprietary driver ("fgrlx" for ATI, free driver is called "ati")
To resume GNOME, Ctrl-Alt-F7, and Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to restart X
I'm sorry in advance if i'm completely off the right track, with me you never know for sure! ;D

Hi Chuck,
Sometimes these things happen in Linux. I ran SuSE 10.1 flawlessly, but when 10.2 came out, I couldn't run the graphical install gui no matter what I tried, it was just a bug in the installer. Now in 10.3 it's fixed and all is well again. Weird things do happen...
I did try Xubuntu on the live cd, but was not at all impressed. I have to stick with SuSE 10.3, to me, it just seems way more polished and sophisticated. May give Ubuntu itself a spin sometime soon though..

All Three CD's are okay. I erased Ubuntu 7.10 from two of them and have another Linux on one right now that I just downloaded and am using. All 3 were checked with Ubuntu's cd integrity check and all say there is 1 file error.
Here's what I managed to get, for what it's worth. I don't understand any of it.
I got hdd:error code:0x70 sense_key:0x03 asc:0x15
Buffer I/O error on device hdd, logical disk block 288625 and 288626
Tried Casper and same error codes.
Then tried safe graphics, same problem
I switched resolution to 1024x768 and no error warnings , just little white bar blinking in upper left corner for 5 minutes.
Then tried safe graphics, same screen res as above with Casper, went to the post office to check mail. Returned 15 min later and the little white bar was still there.
Then, I gave up and decided that I'll erase Ubuntu 7.10 from my 3 CD's and use them for something else. Somewhere in all that, I tried 32 bit and even 16 bit color but no luck.
Ubuntu 7.10 just doesn't like my computer. I'll stay with 7.04 and wait for the next version.
One last thing. Ubuntu 7.10 DOES run on VMware now if I set the screen res to 1024x768 and 32 bit color, but it's so miserably slow it just takes the fun out of it.
I have version 7.04 and it works without a problem, as do all other flavors of Linux I have. Can't win 'em all, I guess.

Yeah, I never tried that here. I'm just running the KDE install out of the box with just a few programs added like VLC, Streamtuner, Xmms and so on.
I had good experience adding Xfce and Gnome to PCLOS though, that went fine, had all 3 working on one setup a while back.
Right now guess I am sold on SuSE 10.3 with KDE... :)

I just installed it and I need some help.
1- How to install Opera. I tried command sudo apt-get install opera but did not work.
2- The browser font ( FF) is not as nice as in windows. I don,t like it. Any tips to make it looke better.
3- How to change the mouse cursor, don,t like the default one at all.
Thanks
Pedro
October 20th, 2007, 05:24 PM
1- probably you have to add a repository. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OperaBrowser
2- Preferences- Fonts in Debian, should be the same here, and in Firefox's preferences Content- Fonts and colors.
3- Preferences- Mouse - Pointers ; you need to find a mouser pointer "theme" (never searched)
Chuck, if the CD's are ok, where do you see that error? When installing from the cd ???
As wilbertnl said check the integrity of the ISO.

Thanks Pedro. Thanks I can change the font but I was asking if you people use the default font or change to to some other that looks better.
I have downloaded some cursor themees and will see how to use them. Unfortunately no option of pointer in Mouse settings, may be somewhere else.

I do like the Dejavu fonts, also the free Redhat Liberation Fonts (https://www.redhat.com/promo/fonts/) look good.
And then you could also go for the (apt-get install) ttf-mscorefonts to get the microsoft webfonts installed.
Otherwise, here is some nice reading about improved font rendering (http://jaganath.wordpress.com/2006/07/16/ubuntu-install-log-6-finally-os-x-like-font-rendering-in-linux/).

has anyone tried the 64 bit version??how is the application support?i am planning to try it..

Hello,
I'm using 64-bit Linuxes for ~ 2 years now. The only thing missing is WINE. Otherwise, everything works fine - and FAST.
BTW, I did the following in the last few weeks on one of my machines:
Upgrade 6.10 > 7.04, ok, only small problems with beryl / compiz
Upgrade 7.04 > 7.10, no good
I guess I have customized the distro too much for the upgrade to work...
I'll try a clean install (with home partition intact), see how it goes.
Cheers,
Mrk

You can either download opera from it's site, or add the medibuntu repo by going to synaptic, settings, repositories, add, then insert apt line
deb h**p://packages.medibuntu.org/ gutsy free non-free
Note: This is a third-party repo that is not supported by Ubuntu

i updated my laptop last night. i've only had the laptop for a few months and it dual-boots with vista. vista runs really slow on it so i never use it. and the old version of ubuntu wasn't very good either because as it was a new laptop the hardware wasn't very well supported. i ran fluxbox on it, that's the best it could do.
but, after upgrading everything worked perfectly, it now uses gnome with no problems and runs really fast with compiz running too. i really like my laptop now 8) i knew it would work better once the devs had had time to get the hardware working better. it runs as well as my desktop ;)
of course when i did the upgrade i only used the base supported repos, about 4 or 5 i think, and ran the correct command too -
gksu "update-manager -c"
my wireless even still works using WPA, i'm glad because i don't know the WPA password, or the password for my router, so i would have had to do a lot more work to get the internet working if it hadn't worked. i've got a compaq laptop, i thought that was just the same as an HP, maybe not as good, but similar. lots of people with HP laptops say you shouldn't upgrade to gutsy because it's not supported. there's even a Sticky about it -
