How does Spyblaster work?

I'm new to Spyblaster and I was wondering how it works. I have Spybot and AdAware and on those sites you have to do a scan once a week, I see on Spyblaster that there isn't a scan option. How does that work, does it just run by itself, I'm bewildered?

SpywareBlaster is not a scanner. It works by blocking cookies, adding sites to IE's restricted site list, and setting killbits for some activex.

Also it does not need to be running in the background. You just open the program every once in a while to update it and apply protection.
