Doesn't CCleaner clean and wipe the index.dat file thoroughly enough?

You're confused. The problem with CCleaner V.2.0 is with cleaning all of the files in the Temporarary Internet Files folder. People have reported troubles since the release of 2.0.
IT DOES clean index.dat with absolutely no problem at all.

In the above CCleaner'link:
"The only issue i currently have (started since previous 1.4x versions, at least 3 months ago) is with index.dat
file, not detected nor deleted. Probably this is due to something wrong on my s.o. , but can't realize why other softwares can still find, read, and delete my index.dat file as always."

Cleaning Temporary Internet Folder is a recent CCleaner'issue. Version 2.0 like you said...
Index.dat files is a older, ancient, durable CCleaner'matter...
In fact there are a problem...

If you look at a index.dat file that was supposedly wiped with ccleaner if it was full of entries before it will have entries in it after ccleaner "wipes" it.

I always said Windows is almost like a glorified copy machine, and in many ways thats exactly what it is in basic run form.
Is there any real reason or useful purpose you think, just why $M designed them to retain data a user no longer needs and just takes up useless space like the Index.dat file holds?

You know, I just tested CCleaner v1.41.544 and it cleaned the index.dat just fine. I checked before reboot and no, the index.dat files are still full. But I've always understood you needed a reboot to clean the index.dat files. So, CCleaner seems to clean them fine after reboot. Is there any program that cleans those files "on the fly" without need for reboot?

There was one program that made that claim.Don't remember the name, but I'm sure it was a topic in this forum long time ago.

Am I missing something here? After I clean with CCleaner, if I search Index.dat the only thing I ever find every time. What, 92kb?

In retrospect, I'd turned indexing off years ago. Right clock C drive>Properties>uncheck indexing if you don't need it and want to keep your disk leaner.

I have never seen Index.dat files show 0kb size after cleaning.
It's always 16kb,32kb etc..

Some index.dat files aren't so easily found. You can check the location of index.dat files (defaul/standard) with these lists: Link1 (http://mysteryfcm.co.uk/?mode=Articles&date=01-11-2005) - Link2 (http://www.acesoft.net/delete_index.dat_files.htm)

This feature isn't index.dat files about. It is to allow an improvement when the search feature is used. So with it the search is a far more fast.

Thanks majoMo! So I install the program and it finds like probably 20 some files. Mostly IE stuff (which I don't even use) and a lot of cookies. They were almost all only 16 or 32 kbs, so I decided to err on the side of caution, didn't touch them and uninstalled the program. I'd used ZSoft Uninstaller to analyze the installation and indeed I can't find any evidence of it. The program (I.dat Suite) worked great, I just don't think I need it.

No problem if you delete the index.dat files with "only 16 or 32 kbs". Windows recreate that after reboot.
Oops!... I use ZSoft Uninstaller also to install/uninstall software - a very good uninstaller.:D
