I downloaded and installed the evaluation version of SPD yesterday. I created a full image backup manually and was able to restore it without problem. I have been trying to create an incremental backup manually and the job keeps failing. Here is the information from the log. What am I doing wrong?

18-Sep-2007 16:38:17 service 100 service (build 40) started job manually as incremental
18-Sep-2007 16:38:17 service 300 trial period has 29 days left

18-Sep-2007 16:38:17 service 100 backup volume C:\ (NTFS)

18-Sep-2007 16:38:17 service 199 try snapshot by VSS API by STC provider

Not sure I see the failure there. Rather than scheduling try taking a differential using "now" and see what happens.

Yes, the log is not telling me anythig to fix. I have been trying using "now" and this is what I keep getting. Maybe it is not possible to create differential backups when the first was created manually, without a schedule.

It is. I have done it. Something else going on. I am just not sure what.

Have you disabled some services by any chance ?

I had a similar error when the COM+ Sys App service was disabled. Can you post a screenshto of the Services window (Go to Start->Run...-
>services.msc)

Got it figured out. I had put the base image into a folder on a USB drive and apparently SP couldn't open it even though I pointed SP to it. When I moved the base image out of the folder to the root directory the problem was gone.

Thanks for the responses and suggestions.

Glad you got it sorted ffreedom01! Sounds like a possible bug in SP though.

I've got incremental jobs running 2 folders deep off the root directory. Strange.

No. It's as quick to create a new full image where I want it as it is to copy it. My images wouldn't fit on a pen drive, to big.

Strange it is. I moved the base file back to a folder on the USB drive and SP said it could not open the file. Moved it back to the root directory and SP ran fine.

hey Pete, i have been meaning to 'discuss' this with you. so far every time i have attempted to create a manual differential back-up to an external drive, all attempts have failed. full back-ups...no problem. i also get the same log entries as the OP. any ideas?

We found and fixed that bug (the one for manual differentials) a couple of weeks ago. We're currently on Release Candidate 2 of our beta for an update to the 3.0.0.3 release of ShadowProtect, so the update is not far off. It will contain the fix for this issue.

{QUOTE-> Yes, the log is not telling me anythig to fix. I have been trying using "now" and this is what I keep getting. Maybe it is not possible to create differential backups when the first was created manually, without a schedule. <-QUOTE}

The "Now" schedule type does not support incrementals. Only the Weekly, Monthly and Continuous schedule types support incrementals.
