I just purchased a 500GB external USB hard drive to backup to. When I backup to this new external hard drive the backup is split into 3 x 4GB files. However, when I backup to my server internal secondary hard drive or when I backup over my network to another computer the backup file is only 1 12GB file. Why does backing up to the external hard drive create 3 files instead of 1?

Thanks

Your external hard drive is formatted with the FAT32 file system, and 4GB is the size limit for files on that format. Reformat it to NTFS and the image file won't be split.

Thanks! That's exactly what the issue is.
