Hello Everyone,
Before anything else let me explain how i lost my data.

I've a dual boot machine win2k & Linux feroda core 2. The boot loader was grub i dont remember the version. I wanted to have bootable USB stick. So i installed cygwin in win2k and used dd.

dd if=diskboot.img of=/dev/sda

It returned OK. But after that when i tried to reboot my PC i get "Boot Error", even the rescue CD did not help.

Any ideas as to how to get back my system?

Thanks
Sridhar

I am not sure, but you must have destroyed the MBR in some way.
My painful experiences have let me to always take a backup of MBR and TRACK 0.
I think you can fix the MBR in DOS by getting a floppy/CD at startup.
There are many products to choose from in Google, but I do not know them.
Microsoft Fixmbr can also do.

When I connected this disk as a secondary in another PC it shows the full 150GB as a single FAT Partition and also lists out some files, probably contents of the diskboot.img (Fedora Core 7).

Is it still possible to recover the partiontions/data.

Thanks

If so what version and build?

Does your system have only one hard drive?

Was the hard drive divided into two (or more) partitions with one for each operating system?

Do you have a backup image of your entire hard drive (all partitions including the MBR and Track 0)?

If so where is that image stored?

If not, this is the situation where a TrueImage backup is most useful. You can restore your entire system to the exact state that it was in when the image was made.

It is always possible to recover data.
Products like R-Studio and Recover My Files can do it.
You will need another computer and put you disk as a second one
-or you could get a new disk and install the operating system on it.
Good luck.
