Blackspear's settings for ESS?

I really felt good about using the settings that Blackspear suggested for use with version 2. I was wondering if someone is going to make suggestions for using ESS. It's probably way too early to do this because one would need access to the final release in order to do it. Things will obviously change. I for one though would welcome any suggestions that a knowledgeable ESS user might make. I have just about enough computer expertise to get myself in trouble and drive myself and my computer crazy. ???

This is the main reason . Also note that EA and ESS are much smarter than NOD32v2 because they are made to maximally automate the usage , they will auto clean/delete by default a lot more things which NOD32 v2 is made to ask by default . The typical installation of them both is just 4+1 NEXT buttons and one FINISH (I have counted them ;D ) .

Not considering myself the most knowledgable but I always recommend users who test ESS/EA to use the default settings (both for firewall/antimalware) . Use the default settings and you don't go wrong ;)

Is there a particular setting whose default value you don't like and for which you'd need a tutorial?

There are really no settings that I dislike. I'm really not computer savvy enough to have many preconceived notions about how this should be set up. Actually the settings in ESS look like they will be much easier to use than Nod32 v2. However there are a couple settings I was wondering about.

In Setup/ Antivirus Protection/ Real-time File System Protection/ ThreatSense Engine Parameter Setup: the default setting under Scan Targets doesn't have Runtime Packers checked and under Methods Advanced Heuristics isn't checked. I was just thinking that maybe it would be a little more secure if they were. But then there's probably a good reason for the defaults that I just don't know about.

Actually I'm only trying to learn a little about setting up antivirus and firewalls. I've developed a deep interest in computer and internet security in the few years that I've been playing with computers. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It will be more secure but it will take more time for ESS/EA to emulate more and more files already on the computer . That's why in NOD32 v2 AH and run-time packers are enabled only for newly-created and modified files (to scan only the most important and save resourses) . In ESS they are disabled by default for all files but enabled for newly-created and modified files only - again by default. ;)

Thanks HiTech. I thought it was probably something like that. I'm just going to let things ride and deal with things as they come. As far as I can see ESS is a sweet app. It's working great on my system. You guys don't have to deal with this thread any more for my sake. I'm all set. I notice in the "Threat Sense" set up under method that 'detect potentially unsafe applications' is unchecked in all genres (mail, web, etc). Is this a good thing?

hey I like that explication about the unpackers - so you say its safe enough to leave already established files on the hdd without that checking??

Well , for users with NOD32 v2 it is already safe . It is enough for those files to be checked the first time with on-demand scan , then everything else will be newly-created or modified

Ironically, I'm of the ilk ESS should be installed with the firewall in INTERACTIVE mode by default with some really good supporting documentation.

In this link I only copied the explanation for these tools from Eset products v3 help file . You should only enable detection depending on your needs
