HI, FOLKS; I think there are few me-too products to Site Advisor out there. And I know for the fact that SiteAdvisor's data base is strictly built upon users's feed-in info, the author or keeper(I rather call him/her this way) may not bother to verify each feed-in, in other words,anyone can feed SiteAdvisor any info that one wishes to manipulate and users are not aware of these, taking the ratings for granted. Therefore, I am asking folks this: do you know any other programs similar to SiteAdvisor but adopting different approaches? Thanks.

BTW SiteAdvisor does not do phishing and one common point of the entries in the above list is that they advise users about malware on the site.
There are many others that are more focused towards phishing protection (trustwatch, callingid) but might also provide an element of protection against malware has well.

Hi, it's Shane from McAfee SiteAdvisor. That's actually not accurate. The vast majority of our site ratings are the result of automated repeatable tests conducted by a pretty massive cluster running virtual machines that crawl the Web.

The test machines run automated tests as well. For example, we test sites for e-mail practices by signing up with unique, one-time-use e-mail addresses and watching the associated inbox for spam. (BTW, the addies we construct are sufficiently complex to avoid being dictionaried). Likewise, our download tests are run by virtual machine. After downloading, we analyze changes to the registry, hard drive and desktop and run a packet sniffer to check network traffic to known ad servers.

We DO use input from the reviewer community which has tens of thousands of active members. We use that input particularly for tests which don't lend themselves to automation like e-commerce experiences.

But the community is there as well because we're not perfect. Sometimes our automated tests make mistakes. We don't catch every bad guy. And the community is really great at helping us there.

Maybe this one is more secure, by means of online privacy concerns, than the other solutions that have already been discussed here?

Just to let you folks know, Finjan and SiteAdvisor can be run simultaneously. I use Firefox and had Site Advisor. After downloading Finjan, the warnings for that program are on the left side and SiteAdvisor notifications are on the right.
I don't know enough to say if this is overkill but sometimes, Finjan states that a site is safe for browsing only whereas SiteAdvisor can give a warning that there is bad stuff within the site and so, it's not wise to download anything.
I tried downloading Finjan for IE7 but the icons didn't show. After looking at the support for the program, I made sure that pictures and third party cookies were enabled but it didn't solve the problem. It's not important for me because I only use Firefox. I think that if you do a lot of research in Google and Yahoo for anything, these programs are vital.
