View Full Version : Cable Select Drive Closest to MOBO is Master?

ATI 10 User Guide

Page 87, Para 2, Line 2 says the BIOS will deem as Master the disk that is connected to the IDE cable closer to the motherboard than the other one.

I thought the end of the cable with the black connector was master and the middle of the cable with the grey connection was slave. At least for my Dell Dim 4600.

I think you're correct. The connector on the end is the master (usually black) and the one in the middle is the slave (usually gray). The end that connects to the motherboard is usually blue.

On a 80 wire IDE/ATA cable for cable select: blue at motherboard. Middle is slave. Master or single drive on the end.

As stated, for CSEL, the blue connector goes to the mobo, the black at the end is Master, and the Gray in the middle is Slave.
